Default Photo scanning service or a scanner?

Anyone ever used a service? A friend is asking me but I've never utilized a service before, I'm not sure what to look for or how to pick a company.
(You know, the kind where you send off your photos and they scan them in for you?).

Or, if anyone has ever undertaken the task of scanning in old pics, what scanner did you use?

thanks in advance for your help ladies!!

Have you used them Col? This might be a dumb question, but with the size at which they scan them, can you enlarge the photo? Or is it only good at the original size?

thanks so much!!

I've used them a few times, but I've never tried to enlarge anything so I don't know.

The FAQ at Scan My Photos says this:

Quote:
Q: What resolution are my photos scanned at?
A: All photos are scanned at 300 dpi. The final file size will vary depending upon the size of the original photograph. A standard 4x6 usually is about 1 to 1.5 MB in size. Many websites refer to resolution as a pixel by pixel notation. To determine what your own picture's pixel-by-pixel resolution will be, multiply the inches by 300 dpi. For example, a 4"x6" print will have a resolution of 1200x1800 (4" x 300dpi = 1200 pixels, 6" x 300dpi = 1800 pixels).
So it looks like a 4x6 photo would still be 4x6 size at 300dpi. But it does say on their website you can pay extra to have your photos scanned at 600dpi which would give you room to enlarge them. A 4x6 photo scanned at 600dpi would be like a 3600x2400 pixel image would be plenty big to enlarge. If you check what resolution places scan the images at, that should give you an idea of how much you can enlarge them.
