Default White noise or quiet?

What do you prefer when you sleep - white noise or quiet?

My DH can't sleep without white noise. After all the noise from the kids during the day, I crave quiet.

What do you prefer?

I like the sound of a ceiling fan. I guess it is just a little white noise. I can't have complete silence or else I start to hear the house noises and that gets my brain going. Like if I hear the water heater turn on I will then think of the broom that is in the hot water closet and then that I need to sweep the boy's room and oh yeah I haven't wiped down their wood walls this month...

So a little white noise to make my brain shut up. Oh and it has to be completely dark.

I cannot sleep in silence, I have to have noise on. Usually I fall asleep to the TV trying to catch up on my shows.

I prefer quiet, but I have a pet turtle, and there's no place to put his tank except my room. That means that it's making noise all night... both the water makes noise going through the filter, and the turtle makes noise swimming/walking around through the rocks.

I'd much rather have quiet!

But, during the day, I prefer to have some sort of noise-- the air conditioner in the background, music, something!

When my dd was an infant she would not sleep through the night without one of those sound machines on so I got used to it coming through the monitor. It couldn't be just any noise either. It had the be water so either the ocean or river sound. Now I sleep better with that going and as soon as the sprinklers come on at 5am, I seem to fall into an even deeper sleep, lol.

It is almost impossible for me to fall asleep without a ceiling fan on. I'm with Amanda, if it's too quiet, then I start hearing things, and that's just no good!

I have a fan (well, really a humidifier but I don't put water in it) that I run every night. I can't sleep if it's too quiet or every tiny little noise wakes me up.

I'm a light sleeper, so I sleep better with a fan going in the background.

Unless I am REALLY drowsy (like after taking a sleeping pill), I generally fall asleep to the TV. I have ringing in my ears if it's quiet, and I am not a fan of the white noise machines. I've had them but I find them annoying. I DID have a sound machine that had a thunderstorm setting...that worked well, but it broke, and I have never replaced it.

This is us exactly. DH needs to sleep with a fan for the noise and I prefer to sleep with no sound.

I sleep terribly without white noise. And I need A LOT of white noise. Our fan in our room sounds like a jet engine! Both of our boys also have fans running in their room although I'm not sure they NEED it (well, they might now that they've had them all of their lives), but I like knowing that any other household noises are not going to wake them.

I'm a very light sleeper, too, so I'd hear every little thing if I didn't have some sort of noise. We use fans in our house, too. We have one in our bedroom and my DD has always used one, too.

white noise, every where if I am to sleep. Fan in our room at night because I do not want to hear barking dogs, screaming people, big bass car stereos and whatever else noise might happen. I have to bring a fan when I travel too, its bad.

I must have music on to sleep... and the moment if the music stops (like if there is a power outage or the station goes off the air), I will wake up in minutes. My hubby could care less... he can sleep through a jet engine taking off in our backyard.

We sleep with a fan. On the occasions that I sleep on the couch if my back hurts, I sleep to SportsCenter.

I've been sleeping with a fan on since high school. If I don't, I start to think abt how I'm awake and I won't know I'm NOT awake until I wake up and oh, am I still awake... etc etc etc. It has to be white noise, too, and not TV or music because if it's anything with words, then I start to focus on that and can't fall asleep.

I've trained everyone in the house to sleep with a fan on, too. DD has had a fan going in her room since the night she came home from the hospital, SS sleeps with a humidifier on, and I finally weaned DH off sleeping with the TV on.

P.S. I also have to sleep with NO SOCKS and one of my feet sticking out from under the sheets/covers.

QUIET....but I do seem to hear everything and am such a light sleeper.....maybe I should try some background noise to sleep better at night....my DH sleeps with asleeping pill so he could care less and my 2 girls could sleep through a war! My boys sleep pretty good once they are asleep, but not as good as my girls My son {10 y/o} need to sleep with the radio on...he use to sleep with a ligth and then it broke and took us awhile to get him anew one, so he started sleeping with his radio on....I have noticed that if I play mozart on the PS3 on the tv upstairs at night, thet EVERYONE seems to go to sleep faster!

We travel with a fan. I can sleep without white noise but my DH cannot (and if we don't bring one he will buy one) and we found out when my boys were babies they need it too.

My DH likes to have some white noise, we almost always have a ceiling fan going. He really, really loves the sound of the dishwasher LOL If we could transfer that sound into the bedroom he'd be a happy guy. I'm more concerned with dark, I hate any kind of light when I'm sleeping.

We all have fans in our rooms (in addition to ceiling fans)... as do my parents and siblings. Like someone else mentioned, I have to travel with a fan. In fact, I even take a fan to the hospital when giving birth (and sleep SOOOOOOOO much better). I hear way too much if it's quiet, and even if I did fall asleep, I'd wake up a million times.

Quiet and dark. I have to cover up all the little lights from the satellite box, computer modem, cell phone chargers etc. Yeah, the hubby thinks I'm a little high maintainence. Forget staying at a hotel. I have been known to block the light under the door and unplug the noisy mini-fridge!

I am a light sleeper so I have to have white noise. Either a fan or I used my Sound Machine app on my iPhone or iPad. That has been my favorite app....I used it almost every night and always when I travel.

If I don' have the fan on, I wake up all night long seeing ghosts and thinking someone is in my room. I'm so glad the simple solution for my crazy is a fan. ; )

It's funny, when we have the fan on, that's when I think I'm hearing noises - like a kid awake in the middle of the night. If the fan's off and it's quiet, there's no question - either I hear the noise or I don't.

I would prefer total silence, but since I live in an a loud area and spent many years working the overnight shift, I sleep with a fan on. It helps drown out all the annoying sounds.

I'm another who has to have some white noise. I can't sleep well when there is total silence so I like to have the fan on.
