I've heard people all the way up in Toronto talking about it on FB... apparently New York, Ohio, even Chicago felt it.
Yesterday's quake in Colorado has me spooked. My grandma is in CO right now and I can't get ahold of her or anyone in her party...

I think I'm about 50 miles from the epicenter, and, yes, I felt it! Oh, my goodness! Not something I ever expected to have happen here in VA. Sure, they happen sometimes, but not like in CA or some other places. So far all that's happened is a few pictures are tilted on the walls. It sure seemed like the house was going to shake apart, though! Yikes!

Yep...about 40 miles from the epicenter here. Nothing damaged just everything open and fell out of some cabinets n such. My ten year old is pretty much freaking out though, poor kit

Yup, felt it! Our building shook for 20-30 seconds. VERY strange sensation. All is well here though.
It was a 5.9 with an epicenter in Mineral, VA.

The dogs were going absolutely crazy. I think every dog in the neighborhood was barking - and we have a lot of dogs in the neighborhood!

We're about 40 miles away as well & it shook the house hard.
Of course my first thought when it started was that cows were stampeding across my roof... One county so far has cancelled school tomorrow to check for damage to buildings & because of aftershock concerns. Naturally we don't really plan for earthquakes around here Last edited by Stacey42; 08-23-2011 at 04:04 PM. |

I work in NYC and on an upper floor in my building and the building shook a lot. We evacuated.
I survived 9/11 witnessing it first hand (I worked in a building attaching to tower 1). This brought back a lot of bad memories and I'm still shaking but back at my desk.

South Colorado. But apparently no damage or injuries from that quake...
After hearing the news, it seems like some of the panic is mis-placed. The earthquakes are serious, and they're scary, especially because there really aren't any in that area. However, they're 1000 times less than the power of the earthquake in Japan, and there isn't a serious threat of loss of life, so that's a really good thing! It seems like a lot of the evacuations are just precautionary.

We felt it a little here in NJ. I'm on the second floor (our building only has 2) and it was swaying and rolling a bit. My parents live about 5 miles from my work and neither of them felt anything but my daughter who is at their house did, she thought she was imagining it. My son and hubby were near my home, about 15 mile and they were in the car and felt it.

Glad everyone's okay! We're about 60 miles away, and our whole house was shaking. It sounded just like an unbalanced washer (but louder), and for a moment that's what I thought it was. 1 photo on my dresser tipped over here, and DH says things fell off bookshelves and desks at his office.
I have relatives in NYC and Connecticut, and they all felt it, too.

We were in Albany, NY at the time eating lunch. We felt a rolling quake- like we were on a boat, rocking back and forth. At first I thought I was getting dizzy and about to pass out or something, then realized everyone could feel it. Unfortunately we were in a restaurant that had wheels on the chairs so it made it feel even more intense for us.. Some family in the center of Massachusetts and in my hometown in southern Vermont felt it too.
It seems like a big deal for us in New England, but just a couple of years ago there was a semi-strong earthquake felt in the center of the states up here that came from Canada I think, only it was at 3am-ish so not too many people felt it (so they aren't super rare here) Last edited by rachaelsscraps; 08-23-2011 at 08:43 PM. |

We had a 4.2 aftershock hit about 45 minutes ago. Not very impressive really, more noise than anything. :P
But apparently we did have a building collapse in the nearby town a few hours ago from quake damage & they have Main street closed down because so many bricks fell off the facades of buildings. Check out the photos from a local photographer. https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?...09446309140693 That county has declared a state of emergency & cancelled school for tomorrow to check all the buildings for damage. My county only has 4 school buildings to check so we are open for 1st day of school tomorrow. |

We felt it in Akron, and I thought I was getting sick. But then someone came to my office and asked if I had felt it too. So at least I knew I wasn't going crazy

I felt it here in southern New Hampshire. Just a seasick gentle rocking sensation, but it seemed to last a long time.

Andrew says he felt it at work. His office is about 25 miles from our house, we felt nothing. We're in southwest Ohio--on the border of Indiana and Kentucky.

Supposedly people felt it in Cincinnati, but I didn't feel anything here just north of Cincy - then again our floor shakes anytime somebody walks by, so somebody could have been passing at the time and I wouldn't have known the difference. My husband said that one of our dogs went nuts at that time though. I have relatives south of Baltimore, and my cousin had to evacuate her school when it hit. I saw on CNN the explanation as to why it affected such a large area versus the ones out west - the fact that the East is one big plate versus many small plates in the West. And the one in Colorado was just west of Trinidad, near where my husband is from - supposedly it was primarily felt in southern Colorado and northern New Mexico.

I felt it here in SC. Can honestly say that's something I never thought I'd experience!
![]() At first, I thought I was losing my mind! I was in car line waiting to pick up DD from school when my car started shaking like someone was jumping up and down on my bumper. I was on the phone with my sister at the time and was telling her about it. A few minutes later, she told me about the "breaking news" that had just come on the Weather Channel. I was shocked!
