Default speaking of surgery...

I was just reading Paula's thread about her upcoming surgery...just as I am hoping to not have my own! A couple nights ago I had a soccer game and I dislocated my kneecap - I knew something was wrong so I popped it back in (sorry, gross) but my knee swelled up to the size of a big grapefruit (I have fairly scrawny knees and I couldnt even see my kneecap anymore) so the girls on my team decided they were taking me to the ER. I didnt fight it too much LOL After xays they also found a small bone chip (said that the muscle pulling might have pulled off a piece of bone? ew!) and so now I am sitting in a "knee imobilizer" brace and waiting for an orthopedic specialist to call me. I guess I will be getting an MRI and seeing is I possibly tore my ACL as well. Ugh!! Does anyone know if that means automatic surgery? Or just physio??

Only bonus is I get to sit on the couch/in bed with my laptop all day....and you know what that means! LOL Just wish the pain meds didnt make me so drowsy!

I work in an orthopaedic office... I wouldn't say that it automatically means surgery, but it is probably a good possibility. The problem is that if your ACL is torn you will continue to have instability. So if you are an active person, which I assume you are given you were injured playing soccer, surgery may be the only way to restore being able to be that active. But, I don't really know - there could be so many different things going on. Wait for the MRI, and it will give the definite answers.

Thanks ladies! I am not really the one worried about it - but hubby is already getting worked up about me possibly having surgery. LOL I think he just doesnt want to take care of the house and kids any longer than he has to!

I had a dislocated kneecap years ago. Not fun. That particular fun also came with a horseshoe tear of the meniscus in my knee. I did not have surgery and instead was at the physical therapist for several months. For the kneecap issue, I had to tape it over to the side for several months until the kneecap was always tracking in the correct groove. It has been over 11 years since my injury and I'm still fine. Hope your injury heals up quickly and that you can avoid surgery!

I also hurt my knee playing soccer. I planted my left foot to kick, someone ran into me and I was on the ground. I heard a snap in my knee. I got up, and immediately fell back down. I am one to kind of wait and see before I go to the doctor, but my knee was quite swollen and I could not fully bend it or straighten it. Went to the doctor after several days when i was for sure something was wrong. I had torn my acl, mcl, and meniscus and had surgery. hopefully yours won't require surgey.
