Default NSBR: painting furniture

Does anybody have experience painting furniture? I love the look of using an older dresser or buffet, painting it, and then using it for a TV console. We just realized that our old buffet is still in our garage (we thought we got rid of it) and so now I want to paint it. We are putting in dark laminate floors, and are getting dark leather couches, and painting the walls a very light taupe color. So thats a lot of neutral going on in the living room and I want a pop of color.

Has anybody used Annie Sloan paints? Are they really worth the money or can I just do a DIY chalk paint mixture with regular latex paint? I know 99.9% of people love Annie Sloan but her colors are so limited. A friend has a color sample board and I just wasnt blown away with the selection. Im drawn to teal, blue, greens but could be persuaded to do something in red. Any paint color recommendations too?
