Default Barenaked Ladies Kid's CD?!

I saw this a couple weeks ago and was disturbed...but it's now official, and I'm looking for thoughts from other parents...

So, Barenaked Ladies (not sure if they're big in the US? but they are up here)...they released a kids CD today. At first I was like...um, really? That's weird. Because I'm like...look at their name - is it appropriate for the name of a "band" singing for little kids??

The first song they released was "7.8.9" which was a silly one based on the joke "why is 6 afraid of 7...because 7 ate 9". I listened to a few other song previews last night on iTunes, and I can't say that there was anything that stood out to me that I'd WANT to buy this CD for my kids.

I think what is disturbing me the most is their name...if they wanted to release a CD, why not change their name to something more kid-appropriate? Bands do it often, change their name because the one they have isn't working...and people get it. They could have had 2 totally different genres and names...but NO, gotta stick with the one they've got and try to sell it to a really young generation.

A guy I work with that is the same age as me and has 4 kids says "if that's the worst that my kids are listening to, I'll be happy...if the music isn't bad, then I won't worry about the name"

What do you think...

well, I love them. Some of their songs crack me up. But yah, their name is kinda not kid-friendly. Kinda agree with your co-worker too, though. There are worse things they could listen too. but its still hard to get over that name, lol.

I personally think they kept the name..to maybe appeal to the parents of the kids. (since we as parents are probably the ones listening to barenaked ladies to begin with) We like BNL so why not buy the kid friendly cd for their kids based on their name alone. If it was another name it would just be another mediocre kid CD that would get passed up. I too listened to the clips on itunes and I will be passing it up only b/c I don't think my kids would like it.

I had the same thoughts about the Naked Brothers, I was just telling DH how could a kids channel be the one hosting a band of young boys with a name like that. I don't listen to their music, but I know they're really popular on Nick and go to all those award shows and stuff.

hmm.. its hard to say.

Barenaked ladies is atually one of the few concerts i've ever gone to. They came up to mcmurray when I was a teenager (i think 15). I remember there were kids/parents/families there and it was such a blast.

I imagine the cd for kids will be awesome but about the name.. yeah not sure?

I love BNL and I agree with your coworker, not really a big deal. They probably could have just used the letters BNL though? Adults would have known it was them.

What bothers me more is that commercial on Nick where the Naked Brothers are singing about how they don't want to go to school. That's not what I want my kids singing! LOL

Ditto! I don't think I'd buy either CD for my kids. But I've been told I was a little bit "uncool" before

The band names don't bother me. They are a bit odd choices for kid bands but I'm not going to worry about it. It's the song content that gets to me. I didn't have any problem with the samples of BNLs CD but like Angie said I really don't want the boys listening to songs about not wanting to go to school. There have a been a couple other things lately I have heard on Nick that I have wondered "That is a kids' song?"

I won't be buying BNLs CD but only because I doubt it would appeal to my boys.

Their music is great, they are so funky and fun, and when I heard they had a CD out for kids, I thought it would be a perfect genre for them. I never once thought about their name, probably because they are very big in Canada, and well, I'm just used to them!

It seems that I am in the minority - I will be buying the CD - and have already gotten my downloads. My son is crazy for the 7-8-9 song.. but mostly cuz that is his sense of humor.
My DH and I enjoy BNL - and I really don't take their name into consideration when I think of their music.
I've been on their mailing list for a few years (due to my love of the Ships & Dips cruise) - and I was super stoked when I heard of their kids CD a few months ago!

(WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY better than kids singing to kids. gah. that music... so totally not allowed in my vehicles!)

LOL! That is too funny. They are popular here too. The name is a little off for children, but mine know of them just from us listening to them. I bet the CD is cute.

Love them.
They are a bunch of awesome dads too.
Of course, in my house we would call them 'nudie-bum' ladies.
They are NOT a kids band, just putting out a kids' CD.
I agree, there is far more offensive kid-oriented entertainment out there.
