Default DSD: which program do you use?

I know it's been asked before but...

I'm having trouble installing my old Photoshop on my new laptop and I just can't afford the new membership type... no point in buying a new laptop if I was not going to be able to use my program per usual... I'm kinda mad about that... I hate having to relearn a program and losing all my shadow styles and actions... I want to cry!

So what is everyone using to scrap with??

When my laptop was giving out on me (earlier this year?) my sweet older fellas bought me a new one. My old one was probably over 10 years old. I was using PS5 on it. (I think that's what it was.) I couldn't get it transferred, installed, running on this new laptop. It irritated me so much to do the monthly payment for PS but that's what I wound up doing. I tried a PSE trial first (which I originally learned scrapping on PSE) but decided to go with PS. It's $9.99 a month.

Where do you see 9.99 a month?? What I see is $23 a month for Photoshop which I find insanely high. I can't even afford $10 a month. I don't work and can't ask that to my husband...

also do you find a big difference between PSE and PS? I have never used PSE but think it would be more affordable to do that if all else fails. But I hate changes! And relearning a program.

I, too, have felt the pain of upgrading my computer and having to go to the monthly subscription. They have a "for photographers" plan that is Photoshop, Lightroom, and the mobile versions for $9.99/mo - https://www.adobe.com/creativecloud/photography.html

Good luck getting back into your scrappy mojo

I see she gave you a link. Scroll to the bottom of that page.

There are some differences to PSE but I believe a number of people use it. I think Amber uses it and "swears" by it. lol I had gotten so used to PS that I didn't want to go back. I did a few layouts with PSE when I was trying out the free trial. Oh... I think Robin uses PSE, too! And Rebecca (MamaBee) and Tammy (CraftyTam) so... they are happy with PSE. They like the photo bin which I'm not used to.

I just looked at the PSE pricing. When I was looking previously, I don't remember them having a 3 year term license. You pay up front and have the license for 3 years, then the Editor is not accessible unless you buy another term.

I like the old days when I would/could buy a CD and install it on my computer. lol And it lasted forever, it seemed. I guess not with newer computers, though. Ugh!

I use PSE (currently running 24)- I've never used PS so I don't think I'm missing what I didn't have. No CMYK coloring, and no journaling on a path IIRC from others.
I typically use an older version until I can't anymore (much like my cars), so I'll get a few years out of a version.

It's just changed with the 2025 version which is insanely frustrating

I started out with PSE and used it for several years before switching to PSCC. The photography plan is a great deal IMO, and I use both PSCC and LRCC (actually LR Classic). You can pay more than $10 for a fast food meal these days. If you're not working, you're probably not ordering from fast food joints and asking for $10 seems like a ton when you are really budgeting down to the penny. We've all been there.

There may come a time when I can't afford the Photography Plan, and I'll make a decision then. I'm not borrowing trouble! LOL

I use Affinity Photo which opens PSD files which is really great... and it is a lot more affordable too... a once off buy price.

I was looking for a way to be able to scrap on the iPad and Affinity Photo came up as an option. Curious if you’ve tried this or if you use it only on the computer.

I also use the $9.99 photoshop/lightroom package. I was thinking of switching to PSE and giving up lightroom but when I found out PSE is turning into a subscription now I won't be doing that. Like Cheryl says if the cost becomes an issue I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.

so did the photography package just go up? Because you all talk about $9.99 a month for that package, but I see Lightroom only for $9.99 and PS + LR for $19.99

edit: nevermind I found the cheaper package with less storage for $9.99/month

I also use the 9.99 plan. I've used it for years & wouldn't go back. I'd give something else up to keep it! I also love that I can have lightroom desktop sync my photos from my lightroom mobile app on my phone directly to my external hard drive- such a time saver for my workflow.

I'm also a Photoshop CC user. Personally, I'm a fan of the software subscription model. I love getting the latest features continually throughout the year rather than having to wait for a big release that's $700 and I have to save up for it. Instead, I just budget the monthly cost as part of my discretionary spending and I get the latest and greatest tools as they're released.

I’m curious Carrie. What made you switch? And which do you prefer now that you’ve tried both?
