Default New addition to my family - Col, you will like this long story. :)

Lately, I have been looking for a small lap dog for myself since we finally found homes for all of our orphaned kittens. (not sure if anyone remembers that).
Anyway, I had been looking for a few weeks and had passed on several doggies of mixed breeds, thinking I wanted something along the lines of a Chihuahua, Maltese, Yorkie..etc. I really wanted something small that would fit on my lap because we already have a big 100 lb. Chocolate Lab.
So, the other day I saw photos of some Rottweiler puppies that someone needed to find homes for. Well, it wasn't something I was interested in adopting, but I showed my husband because we had a Rottweiler many years ago and he loved it to death and has talked about getting another one for awhile now. Again, I didn't really like the idea because he had "his" dog and I wanted to find "mine".
So, just out of curiosity, he called the gentleman that had these puppies and tried to set up an appt. to go look at them. Well, apparently the guy gave him the runaround and pretty much tripled the fee that he was asking for in the ad and my husband was basically like "forget it". But he was a little sad about it... so he went home and got on Craigslist.
Well.....while there, he started perusing the Pets section and found an ad for a beautiful Rottweiler girl that was 5 years old.
So, I'm at work and my husband comes into my JOB (I work in retail, mind you) with this huge GORGEOUS Rottweiler on a leash. She is so beautiful and big and soft. I'm like...WHAT! I was not expecting him to actually come HOME with one. Kwim?
So he proceeded to tell me her story.
Her name is Athena and we think she's along the lines of 1.5-2 years. She is a rescue dog who they think escaped from a puppy mill and was being used as a breeder dog. Her rescuers took her to get her fixed and she was already pregnant, so she has lost her babies. The lady who was fostering her had interviewed and declined 12 families before interviewing my husband and allowing him to take her home.
I'm not sure if she has been abused but I'm thinking she probably was because she is very skittish at short loud noises or quick movements.
However, she is very sweet, so darling, and loves to cuddle...just such a big bear. At the same time though, she is very protective, yet not violent or aggressive. We've had her 36 hours and already, I don't know what I'd do if something ever happened to her. She likes my other dog and doesn't mind my cat so they are just one happy family!
Here's some quick photos. She is still unsure about my camera and I didn't want to push it:

*swoon*!!
Awww, I love it Mandy! I'm so glad you found yourself a lover!! You're going to give her a wonderful forever home

If she was from a puppymill, she's bound to be skittish in general, not necessarily from abuse. Puppymill's do awful things to an animal's psyche.

Gawd, I'm so glad you saved her! She's GORGEOUS!! I can't wait to see more pics of her

PS~2 thumbs WAY up on the prong collar. I'm a HUGE advocate for the prong I haaaaate choke collars and halti's.

Guess she's not exactly a lap dog, is she? But she is GORGEOUS!! Sounds like she was meant to be.

I'll second the prong collars! We use them on our Golden Retrievers.

Thanks guys! We've had nothing but luck with the prong collars - we use one on our Lab and they just work better.

Awww... congrats! Seems like she has already lived up to her name with her rescue story.

I keep vacillating between a lapdog (or two) or one big Rottie/Great Dane size dog. Not that we're getting another dog anytime soon (have a medium-sized lab-esque mutt now), but once we get our house in a couple years, I told Jeff I'm finally getting my OWN dog. We had one sweet little puppy when I was 5 years old, and my parents made me give her back to the pound because she kept running away (had to keep her outside b/c of Dad's 'allergies') and then never allowed me to get another one.

When I was little, my grandparents had a sweet old Doberman named Babe. The story goes that she would let me lay on her belly when she was lying in the kitchen, and one time I fell asleep there. When my grandmother came over to wake me up, Babe growled at her! *lol* My grandparents said she was always protective of me and let me love on her until she passed away. I want my children to have that kind of relationship with a dog, too, kwim? I feel like I really missed out as a child.

Awwwww, that is so sweet LA!!! I really hope that my kids can have that sort of closeness with Tiger in the future

Proven fact: People who have a relationship with a pet (be it a dog, cat, bunny, gerbil, whatever) are happier.

those big dogs can make a good lap dog too just gotta give them a little extra room LOL She is very pretty!! I want a dog also but I want to wait til our yard is fenced because we have problems with strays and Id want him/her to be able to play in the yard without worrying about some stray dog coming and attacking it

rottweilers are amazing. if i wasn't afraid of the commitment a dog entails, worried about hair, slobber, or my horrible allergy issue to dogs (lol) i would get a rottweiler. so smart. so lovable. love them.

a huge congrats on your new baby, mandy!! your story warmed my heart. i looove when people rescue pets!!!
