Junebug's "do people stare" thread got me thinking about my biggest pet peeve/photographing quirk.
I do not let anyone see the photos until at the very least I have them downloaded, and preferably not until I have them edited. I do not like to show people the photos on my camera, simply because things look so different on that little screen then they do once you get them on the computer. That said, my biggest pet peeve is when an adult takes a photo of a child, and the child immediately wants to see it on the screen. Makes me want to scream. I have no idea why this bugs me so much, but maybe because my own philosophy is to capture people doing what they do naturally, not posing. Even bigger pet peeve... my sister lets my niece run around with her camera and take pictures. She's been doing this since she was 3 or 4 (she's now 7). I just want to grab that camera and tell her it's not a toy, but since she's not my child, I don't. I've only in the last six months started letting my children touch my camera, and then only under my supervision... and I don't even have a DSLR, just a P&S I love very much. Maybe I'm a little too serious about photography... |

I got my 2 yo one of those toddler cameras. I don't let him touch my other one. It's a high end P&S so he doesn't touch it! My biggest pet peeve is when my husband takes pics and he does it wrong. He generally knows how I like my pics taken so he does it right most of the time but when he doesn't [like he doesn't zoom in on our faces or something] it drives me nuts!

If it's an adult I might show them a photo I just took but I say "I don't really want to go through them right now because with the buttons on this thing sometimes it is really easy to push it twice and then it deletes".
As far as a kid, yes I do get that and sometimes it is annoying, but I also know that if I let them look at the photo that they are usually more cooperative as photo subjects. And you would be surprised at how young they are when they can figure out they want to see the picture on the screen! If it is more than once or twice that I am asked I usually will tell them that we can look at them on the computer when we get home. But I understand your frustration. I agree that I want to wait until I have time to "fix" photos before letting people see. It seems like my relatives just post what would amount to their "whole roll" of photos without removing the bad ones. That irritates me. I have a thing about trying to make everyone look their best. I really want people to be pleased that I have taken a picture of them. And if it isn't good I will just delete it.
