Default Cultural differences

So we are stationed in the UK and my kids are going to the British school in town (really a village). Well I noticed on the weekly news letter that they are having a Harvest Fesival at school this week. (Next week is mid term and they are out of school until Nov 2) So I went to pick up the kids and asked the teacher if she needed parents for the Harvest Festival and she told me its a religous assembly to give thanks for the harvest this year...oops. They really should send notes home to the American parents homes...I was gonna send my kids into school that day as Michael Myers from Halloween and a witch...hows that for giving thanks

LOL, I love it!

I remember being an 18 yr old on vacation without parents, and having this British guy I met ask if he could come 'knock me up' the next day. I was shocked, and he was mortified when he found out what that meant here in the US.

My son goes to a private Catholic school here in the States, and they do the same thing. They have a Harvest Festival where they give thanks for the harvest. No costumes are allowed!

I laughed out loud when you said what you were going to send you kids to school as ... can you imagine the look on the teachers faces?! Too funny!

I went to a Catholic school growing up and we had the same thing. It was a completely separate event from Halloween. Everyone usually dressed up in like "harvest" clothing, like overalls, plaid, that kind of thing. I can just imagine someone showing up in costume.

You would have been the talk of the staffroom

I'm a teacher here in the UK and it's our Harvest Festival on Wednesday - No Halloween costumes allowed!

Well if you have any American kids you might want to let them know...I guess with the US being so "PC" we call Halloween, Harvest...and I didn't go to any type of religous school so I had no idea. Theirs is on Thursday.

Me too... Nothing like Michael Myers to make me feel thankful! You would think they'd keep everyone informed though... good thing you checked!

That is so funny!!!

Here we have 3 'holidays' at the same time...
31st it's halloween - DD english class celebrates
31st is also folk day - we celebrate our fairy tale characters
02 - the day of the dead - a religious holiday

the 3 go together and we have no problems... but on the 2nd we don't dress up - LOL.

It's the first time that I hear of a Harvest Festival. I went to Catholic school up to college and we would celebrate Halloween. My high school was even run by nuns and all, and we would still celebrate Halloween.

We still celebrated Halloween too. The Harvest Festival was a completely separate event, I want to say it was in November right before Thanksgiving? But it was a long time ago so I could be wrong about that, haha. The 2nd Catholic school I went to only did Halloween though so I think it was more of a school tradition than a major holiday.
