Default FINALLY (Super Excited)!!!

I am SO excited you guys!! I finally get a handmade quilt!

A close friend of my family makes AMAZING quilts. She stitches almost the whole thing by hand (she recently started using a machine for the little peices), and she embroiders gorgeous designs onto almost all of them.

Whenever anyone gets married or has a baby, she makes them a quilt. I could NOT wait to get mine - I've admired them for years. My sister got a GORGEOUS one for her wedding (pink on one side with burgundy on the other, scalloped border - ALL stitched by hand, and a huge and beautiful floral pattern hand embroidered from the edges to the middle). It obviously took our friend HOURS upon hours to make. And my sister didn't even send her a thank you note and didn't appreciate it at all (she just destroyed it - it's got spills all over it and is torn in more than one spot now)!!

So obviously E was very disappointed that she went to all that work for basically nothing (I completely understood). When I got married I couldn't wait to get mine... only I never got one. I guess she bunched me in with my sister and figured I wouldn't appreciate it either. I was SO disappointed. I had been waiting like 10 years to get one!

Anyways, long story short. DH and I's anniversary is this month (happy 6 to us!), and my mom talked to our friend about getting a quilt made for us!!! She said she would happily make one, and I'm going over there tomorrow to pick a pattern and then out fabric shopping for it! I can hardly wait! I'm going to get a handmade quilt!!!!

Awe, thats great! Im glad you finally get your quilt, and that kinda stinks that your sister seemed to have ruined it for you. Quilts are such a personal thing, IMO. I have a few I have made for us, and they are so special. We also have one that my husbands great grandmother made way back when, and its special in its own way too. :-)

You must share pictures when it's done.

Kristen

that is awesome!! I love quilts. (I actually avoid the fabric store because I just get so lost when I go in there looking at all the pretty fabrics LOL) I want to learn to make one someday. Make sure to share pictures when you get it!

Oh I will!! I really can't wait to get it!

Kristen - you are so right, they really are very special and personal. I have my grandpa's quilt that my grandma made for him. I loved my grandpa SO much, I always felt really close to him. The quilt of his was on his hospital bed when he passed away, and it was laying on him the last time I saw him alive. It's a very special quilt, and while it does NOT match my room in any way, it stays on my bed. It just reminds me of him and all our happy memories.

That's awesome sweetie! From the way you are so excited, I know you will love it and appreciate it for all it is. Quilts really are a labor of love. I only give them to family or VERY special friends in my life. Congrats on a beautiful gift and Happy Anniversary!

You can have it repaired - Just look up the local quilt guild and they can hook you up with someone who can repair it! They can even use vintage fabric to match!

Exciting! I love handmade quilts!
We got one from my (step)grandmother and great-grandmother when we married and it looks nothing like their typical wedding ones. lol I asked for bright colors and fun patterns instead of pale/light colors or white. The boys and Belly each got one when they were born (Ryan and Belly's came just from my grandmother). Plus we all get one when we turn 18.
