Question Layered file format question

When I started scrapping, all the templates were in .psd format and so that's sort of what I've always saved my files in. Now I'm seeing them in both .tiff and .psd.

What's the difference? I tried googling it, but then got more confused. Is there an advantage to one over the other? I use PS CS4 if that matters...

Tiff files takes up a lot less space than PSD files. That's pretty much the only difference. There is ZERO loss in quality in saving as tiff instead of psd.

I convert all templates and layouts and whatnot into tiff's.
You can do a save as, and just make sure the LZW and ZIP options are checked and you're good to go.

Tiff files are also layered, but they are typically much smaller in file size. I have abandoned my use of .psd files in favor of them. I'm all about anything that saves hard drive space! Sometimes it can take slightly longer to complete a save, but I haven't noticed a significant difference. You shouldn't have any compatibility issues with your program.

File size is the big issue. Especially for folks with limited space...tiffs can be up to 50% smaller in size than equivalent .psd file (but it's more like 15-30% in general). They take up less space, lose no quality in storage, and allow you to store more

I save all of my layouts in .tiff files, too, until the point I've printed out my layout and delete the whole thing. But I don't even save my non-template layouts in .psd..they're all .tiff.

As everyone else said - less space.
But the main reason I save things as .tiffs is because I can actually see what it is I'm opening. For me, psd files just show up as the CS logo, tiffs show up as the image.

Using PS definitely does matter.... PSP doesn't save .tiffs in layered format!!!
(Just posting in case any other reader converts all her stuff over to a .tiff only to find out she can't open them layered in PSP)
