Question NSBR: Must have new mom/baby needs

Being a first time mom, I was wondering what your absolute must haves are for new moms/babies.
We find out next week the gender of our cupcake and I am dying to do the registry. I know it may be soon but I feel like I can never prepare enough. So I was hoping that some of you would help me out. I don't want to put things on there that I'm never gonna use or use once and be done. I want a practical baby registry.
SO what are your must haves for newborns, moms, infants, etc. It could be anything from the obvious, to the not so obvious but you couldn't live without it.

We'll say your top 5 items? (IF you have more you want to share go for it, or less)

Thanks!

Boo-pee
premie stuff
Mine were both on the smaller side and drowned in anything newborn. We got some premie onies and what not.
Mittens so they don't scratch themselves. Its a bit nerve racking to trim their nails when they are so tiny and fragile.
Large diaper bag- we would need everything just for a walk

My girls were a little different so here is our list of essentials:

A swing
The bouncy seat
(each loved a different one)
Those containers that you can premeasure formula into.
blankets of all shapes and sizes
A noise machine (we had one that attached to the crib and was an aquarium
a chair that rocks.
A great friend/relative to go for advice or to vent to or just cry with
cloth diapers for burp cloths
a babysitter you trust so you can leave your house.

Some of that is not registry stuff, but without I might have lost my mind!

this really isn't a direct answer, but I really thought this was a great post with tips for saving money when having a baby:
http://www.younghouselove.com/2010/0...-baby-edition/

Some of the must haves for us:
boppy (although I hear some people don't care for them... I used ours for nursing and for laying baby on)
cloth diapers for burp cloths (I second that one... my babies are big spitters and these are the best burp cloths)
swing!!! (our babies also don't sleep so great, so this has been essential for us)

I love having a bouncer, but I don't know if it's essential. I didn't have it with my first, but I appreciated it with the other 2.

Definitely NOT a diaper pail. They don't work well enough. Just use a plastic bag and stick it in the trash.

I heard wipe warmers are a waste too. We've never had one, I don't know.

Good luck, it's fun planning for a baby!

Swing
bouncy seat that plays music and vibrates
exersaucer- my kids loved being in them and it saved my sanity when I was cooking
onesies
divided container for formula (if you are doing formula)
an awesome diaper bag (I had this one and LOVED it- http://www.thebumblecollection.com/M..._Code=jessica_ )
cloth diapers to use for burp cloths
rocking chair
diapers- but dont get a whole bunch of newborns. Maybe 1 package at first then see how much your little one weighs when born. My son was 7 lbs 12 oz at 36 weeks and barely fit into the newborn diapers.

If you bottle feed- dont go crazy on the bottles just yet. Buy 1 of each kind that you want to use to see if the baby likes that bottle. We went through tons of bottles to find the right one.

diapers and wipes, of course
basket for the dishwasher...for the little things
gas drops!!! never wanted to run out of those
bouncy seat
swing (and a jumperoo when they get a bit bigger)

a black/white/red mobile...those are the colors they see first...Rachel would stare and laugh at hers for a good hour...it just made her happy (which you know makes mom happy)

Never heard anything good about wipe warmers, and most ppl I know were pretty ho-hum about the diaper pail.

-A bouncy seat that vibrates (my DD napped in it during the day as she never like to be far from where everyone was during the day, at night she slept fine in her crib)

-baby sleeping bag (the ones I had were fleecy, that allowed the arms to be free... DD slept in them so well I found larger ones when she outgrew the small ones.... I still have the ones I used and will be handing them down to my siblings if they ever have kids)

-onesie sleepers with snaps along the whole length from one leg to the other.... the ones that only snap part way are a pain.

Money wastes? diaper pail, baby bathtub (used it for maybe 2 wks), huge pkgs of diapers (they outgrow them so fast!).

I used mainly:

1) Swing. Buy one of those that swings side to side, you can use that right away, then it can convert to a front to back one, that you can use when they get a bit bigger.
2) Lots of receiving blankets. I used them for burp cloths, on top of the change table, pretty much everywhere
3) Onesies - the full piece ones with the snaps on the crotch, not the ones with the buttons up the middle. Once they learn to roll over, they will lie on them and it's not comfy I wouldn't think!
4) Jammies - without feet! You can get longer out of them if they don't have feet. I used to buy the sleepers without feet (Snugabye makes them up here in Canada, not sure if you have that down there), and put socks on the kiddos rather than using the sleepers with feet. I would get weeks longer out of them, because babies grow like weeds.
5) Diapers - do NOT buy a dozen packs of Size 1! I had 2 babies that were almost 10 pounds, and the Size 1s are useless in that situation LOL! Just buy a pack of Size 1 and Size 2, and go from there.
6) Baby Washcloths - grown up ones are just too big to clean in between their itty bitty toesies!
7) Baby Monitor - I didn't have anything fancy, just a cheap regular one that worked
8) a really good breast pump - Don't skimp on this if you're breast feeding. Get a good one that has multiple speeds. Mine was a Medela, and I think everyone I know that used one, loved theirs.

What I didn't use but had:
1) Burp cloths - they didn't protect as well as receiving blankets, because they weren't as big.
2) Bottle sanitizer - I breast fed, but if I needed a bottle, I boiled it in the pot.
3) boppy pillow - a lot of people use them for feeding, but I never liked it
4) Pacifiers - I breast fed, and didn't use them. I also had two thumbsuckers instead.

For YOU:
1) Bra pads for leaking boobs. Whether you breast feed or not, you'll need em!
2) Tons of big ole pads for after the baby is born
3) Tuck pads or witch hazel if you have a regular delivery, you might have tearing or other issues and this will help you feel better
4) Ice packs (see #3) LOL
5) If you're breast feeding, you want good nursing bras. Do NOT skimp on these! Trust me, I tried!
6) Patience. If you're breast feeding give it at least 6 weeks to 2 months to get the hang of it. Practice makes perfect!

That's just some of what I can remember, my baby is 5 now! *sniff

PS: Bring your OWN pads to the hospital. Theirs suck! LOL!

I've become more of a minimalist since my first, my list is:

1) car seat
2) swaddling blankets
3) diapers
4) pjs... the only time we dressed up was for church otherwise, it was pjs all day
5) baby carrier/sling

I don't have time to do a big list right now, but wanted to share my #1 must have:

Miracle Blanket

I couldn't have lived without it for either baby. I know you can use reg. blankies, but both my babies could free themselves and would wake up. This was the only thing that helped my non-sleepers sleep.

Must haves
Car seat that attaches to a stroller---and make sure the stroller will grow with baby. Once the baby gets heavier, it will not be fun to carry the carrier everywhere so to be able to snap it into a stroller is awesome, trust me!

Baby blankets-pick one that you will get your baby used to. My son still uses a blankie he used at birth and he is 2 years old.

Baby washcloths, you will always use these..I still do.

If your breastfeeding, a pillow called My Breast Friend saved me and I was able to bf for 2 years successfully. I did not use the pillow the entire time but it will help you the first 6 months or so.

A diaper bag that is not too big or too small. Something you will be able to carry everywhere because you will need to.

Patience, a new baby is lovely and as he/she grows you will encounter some overwhelming moments. Just remember that it is normal and patience will get you through it all.

Wastes
Wipe warmer - never used it and my baby did not cry because the wipes were cold.

Lots of bottles if you bottle feed. The more you buy the more you will have to wash (hahahaha)

bibs---you will not need them til baby starts teething

socks and shoes for newborn---not really necessary. Let the baby's feet breathe!! heehee

1. Onesies and zip up jammies.... that is pretty much all my DD wore the first 2 months of her life. A lot of the cute newborn clothes never even got worn because they just weren't practical and jammies & onesies were easiest to access the diaper.

2. Boppy pillow... my DD still loves it (she's almost 3) - it's now her pillow at night. lol

3. Ditto on waiting on the newborn diapers. My lil' one grew out of the newborn size in like 2 weeks. If you register for diapers, register for size 1 and 2. And I'm a huge Pampers fan. I tried Huggies and the Costco diapers and they leaked really, really bad... they couldn't even keep pee in.

4. Not a registry item, but prepare freezer meals or buy freezer meals for the first 2 weeks so you don't have to put much effort into dinner. You're gonna be exhausted and running on no sleep.

5. If you're planning on breastfeeding: breast pump. I have the Medela and it was great. Get the electric one... I couldn't imagine hand pumping for 20 minutes...

I would add some feeding things to your registry - sippy cups, bowls, spoons & forks - you don't need them right away but it's absolutely ALARMING how quickly six months flies by, and it's nice to have that stuff waiting in the wings when you need it.

We are still using our swing at just 2 days shy of 11 months. I highly recommend one that plugs into the wall (We have the Graco Lovin Hug one and it's fabulous).

The Bumbo baby chair is awesome IF your baby likes it. DD LOVED hers, she practically lived in it for the longest time. DS, not so much.

I found a bouncy seat to be very handy for the first four months. After that, both kids were too mobile and it was a hazard more than anything. I borrowed an exersaucer from a friend and it was awesome - it kept them upright and happy when I couldn't hold them (and I'm a big babywearer, but sometimes you need a break for whatever reason). But it is one of those things you only use for a few months, so if you can borrow one, that's best b/c they are EXPENSIVE!!

Onesies: I loved the wrap around style while he was tiny and not moving around much yet.
Boppy: If you b/f, its necessary, totally, if you don't, it was still awesome to use to prop the baby and hold them.
Bassinet/Co-sleeper: the crib just seemed so big and open when they are little, I loved having him right next to the bed the first few months.
Bouncer: great when he was a bit older.
Swing: we had a portable style and it was freakin awesome once he was a couple of months old, slept in it a lot.

Things I Used Every Day For The First 6 Months
receiving blankets (at least 2 dozen) -- I wish I could still get away with using them now! They are so handy and I had at least one stashed by every place to sit in the house as well as a couple in the car and the diaper bag. Not just for spitup and baby messes, but also when I or DH spilled things, too! *lol* Grandmas and grandpas will always assume your babe is freezing cold, too, so those come in handy to mollify them when they are holding the babe.

swing -- E. would not sleep unless she was in the swing or someone's arms until she was 4 months old.

baby carrier -- If you have big boobs or back problems, do not skimp on this! Make sure it has really wide comfortable straps and that you can put it on and take it off easily. If you think you will be a longterm babywearer, get a 'convertible' one that will work when they are little and big.

diapers & wipes & carseat & stroller (obviously!)

onesies & jammies -- If you have a gurl, you will not believe how many people buy you superfancy frilly Easter Sunday dresses that will never see the light of day from the closet. Sigh.

a couple different types of binks -- E. took the first kind we gave her, but don't invest too much since sometimes they like different kinds or won't take one at all. If you discover the baby likes it and what kind, buy A LOT of that kind, though! *lol* I would suggest at least 6. They tend to run off and hide when you turn your back.

swaddling blanket (2 or 3) -- When E. finally transitioned into sleeping in her crib, she had to be swaddled or she would wake up and be awake for hours. She slept swaddled from 4 months until 9 or 10 months, I think.

diaper bag -- Always pack an extra set of clothes (or two), receiving blankets, feeding equipment, a bink, a big plastic bag for wet clothes/yucky diapers, and a snack for you!

car mirror -- I hated not being able to see the baby when I drove and you can buy a big mirror that reflects off (onto?) the rearview mirror from BRU for, like, 10 dollars. Bonus: when she gets older, she will really like looking at herself in the mirror. My parents live 2.5 hours away and we have seen them at least once a month since she was born 13 months ago, so this was really a necessity/peace of mind thing for me.

a gigantic cup (if you are BFing) -- I have never been so thirsty in all my LIFE after BFing every 2 hours. After I finished a session, I would drink it all down and then refill before the next session.

ETA: the Boppy --- This SO helped w both BFing and bottle feeding for the first few months.

my top five:

- onesies
- pacifiers
- boppy
- washclothes
- cloth diapers for burp clothes - we liked the flannel ones the best

things we didn't use:
- receiving blankets
- sleep positioner
- the little bear that plays a heartbeat - it's suppose to help sooth the baby - didn't work for us!
- I've got a MILLION of those rings to attach toys to - I think we used 2! lol

diapers....lots and lots of diapers. I would not waste much money on the newborn/premie type diapers. I found even my teeny babies were in them for only a week or two before they got to small. Plus you can always fold them down.

Onesies...they are great for under clothes on cooler days and great for them laying around the house in so they arent getting too warm.

Sleepers...I loved the little footie pajama type sleepers. But make sure they are the soft cottony kind. They have some that are not that comfy.

Bibs...babies drool ALOT. Having bibs around to collect the drool is great. I lived them because I could put them on the baby when they were wearing a cute outfit and if I wanted to take pictures with friends/family members I could just take the bib off and the outfit was clean and dry.

Receiveing blankets & cloth diapers-I used both for burp clothes to put over my should so they would not spit up on me.

a couple cute outfits for pictures-they grow so fast and there are so many adorable outfits but dont waste hte money on the newborn ones because they really do grow fast and will be out of newborn withing a few weeks usually.

bouncer/exersaucer-My youngest LOVED HIS!! He would play in it for forever.

bouncer seat- great place to lay the baby when you are at home and dont want to put her/him all the way to bed.

stroller- something that reclines all the way/is easy to pop up/close down and is comfortable for you and your S/O to push. You can try them out in a baby store.

A few warm blankets & outfits if you have a cold winter. I like to get mix/match ones instead of sets.

baby monitor...so you can hear baby in crib if you go outside or are in another room.

eventually a high chair.

a playpen/playyard.

a nice baby bag which is kinda unisex so dad wont be too embarrassed carrying around a flowery pink baby bag if it is a girl

travel sized stuff like lotion, baby oil, diaper ointment, baby wipes etc to stash in the baby bag

bottles if you will be bottle feeding....try to have several of them so that you dont run out at the last minute and have not gotten a chance to wash/sterelize them. Also if you have cats the cats will bite the nipples off LOL. I learned this the hard way with my kids.

swing for baby-it works magic when you need to get some cleaning/cooking done and most babies love laying in the swing

my son also loved the fisher price aqaurium. It shone lights on the ceiling and played music. (I think that is what it was called...he is 13 so heck Ive forgotten alot)

baby book-keep it handy to record firsts. Also keep a notebook or calendar around to jot them down so you dont forget. I made a note of writing in the baby books at least once a month but sometimes I forgot dates because I didnt record them right away.

I think thats the things I can think of right now for needs

Things I did not use:

diaper genie (I used the plastic baggies from the grocery store to wrap diapers. They sealed out the smell and it was so much more afforable)

changing table-I always just changed baby wherever we were and just put a receiveing blanket and a diaper pad under them. Never used my changing table

bassinet-never really used one of them either. Not that they are not useful. They are I just never really used them.

The MIRACLE BLANKET!!!

Other swaddling blankets will never compare to this one...DS was a preemie and colicky and would sleep maybe 2 hrs a stretch..after 4 weeks of that someone on my Mommy board at the time suggested TMB and the very first night I wrapped him up like a little burrito and he slept 6 hours straight...within 2 weeks he was sleeping through the night and we swaddled him in it for naps and bed for 7 months.

I wrapped DD up from day one and she slept through the night by 2 weeks. It is designed so that their little arms aren't able to wiggle free of the swaddle..which is what usually wakes them up.

BEST BLANKET EVER!!!

It's my go to gift for new Mamas.

Other than that my only must have was our bouncy seat...we used it constantly with both kids.

Diaper Genie - TOTAL waste of money.

you don't need as much as you think. i'm forgetting thigns it's been 7 years!

a place for the baby to sleep when it comes home from the hospital - bassinet, cradle or moses basket and a few sets of sheets for it
diapers/wipes/diaper cream (triple paste is really good)
recieving blankets
clothes
birds eye cloth diapers - i used these as burp cloths - they are thin and soft
dreft for washing the baby clothes (or non-toxic, fragrance free from other companies)
car seat for coming home from hospital and a stroller the car seat attachs into
changing pad/diaper bag
if you are breast feeding you'll want a pump & breast pads if not bottles, nipples, formula, dishwasher basket for nipples, etc.
baby bathtub or pad for kitchen sink
baby bath soap
soft washcloths/towels
Rectal thermometer
First Aid Kit
Infant Tylenol
Nasal Aspirator
Baby nail clippers
Pacifier
Baby brush

for you...
Maxi pads
Lanolin for sore nipples
I'd wait on nursing bras - I was HUGE and ended up stopping on the way home to buy a couple then in a few weeks I was able to buy closer to my normal size. I went from a C cup to an H.

not necessary but nice to have
boppy or nursing pillow
swing
bouncy chair
baby bjorn or sling
playmat

things you don't need to buy right away:
highchair and solid feeding supplies
bibs
jogging stroller (not until 6 months)
baby backback
Childproofing supplies
Exersaucer
Front facing car seat
Shoes
Baby Wipe Warmer (just use your hands)
Crib (this can wait a bit)

oh and i am a HUGE fan of the Miracle blanket for swaddling. Swaddling made all the different with my second. He'd sleep much longer if swaddled and go down easier.

I think everything has been covered, but I just wanted to day - I loved shopping for all the bits when I was pregnant, lol!! I think if I'd had the internet at the time, I would have spent much more than I needed to though!

Learn from my MISTAKES...LOL

1. Wipe warmer is a total waste (thank you to my mom-ugh). You can put the wipe between your hands and rub for a few seconds if the wipe is too cold.

2. Diaper genie....OMG I hated this thing but so many I talk to love it so it's really your choice. I received mine at my shower but could never figure it out. I lived in an apartment and just dumped the bag of diapers each day in the dumpster...never had a problem with smell.

3. Monitor...really wish I had the one with the video thingy on it but that's a personal preference.

4. Don't overload on diapers and bottles/nipples...I got most of my first diapers at my shower and they worked just fine. They are a good thing to ask for...especially size 2s.

5. When looking for a stroller/infant car seat make sure you test the weight of the car seat itself...mine was a little on the heavy side since I was all about the look of the darn stroller instead of the practicality.

Ok now for what I loved.
1. Exersaucer: it will be awhile before your baby can sit in this but let me tell you it was my favorite thing.

2. I always wished I had one of those shopping cart cover/seat thingys (no clue what they are called). They were just becoming popular when my dd was a baby.

3. I bought cloth diapers to use as burp clothes and spit wipe ups instead of actual burp clothes.

4. You can't go wrong with bibs, receiving blankets, onesies, and booties or socks.

5. I also tried different brands of diapers until I found what I liked. My favorite were luvs.

6. The swing was another of my favorites...mine converted from a swing to a high chair but I never used that part.

The main thing to remember is you will make mistakes just like the rest of us...it's all one big learning experience. My grandmom always says listen to your mother's intuition and you will be fine. Hope this helps.

Really? I loved the huge diaper like ones I got at the hospital. I asked for some to bring home.

What I was most grateful for buying (myself) were some lovely flannel cotton nightgowns and wrapover vests (ended at tummy area). Oh my! These were just fabulous for bedtime for all three of mine (yes, including my first who was a boy). They looked cherubic in them and, more importantly, no poppers or anything to worry about when changing at night.

I loved the baby bath that I had too, it was one of the ones that sits on top of the regular bath and you fill it under the bath tap and then let the water out of it's own plug hole. It really was a life saver as I had a C Section with all three and I really don't know how I would have coped with any other type of baby bath.

Two out of my three babies were on the small side and both times my mum had to go into town to buy smaller clothes for them.

Other essentials (for me) - baby monitor, cd (or other music player) and lullabies, moses basket (all three were kept in this next to my own bed until they outgrew it, made night feeding and settling so much easier for me!), couple of diaper bags (I ALWAYS kept one with basics in the car in case I forgot the main one or got carried away out and about for longer than I thought). Oh and, those floor free standing baby gyms, all three of mine loved the one I had.

Things I had that didn't get use out of - baby bouncer (the chair type and the ones you hang from a door frame). That's about it, I was pretty good at not getting carried away with all the marketing hype!

Agree that the time does fly and having some weaning equipment would be helpful (ice cube trays, spoons, dishes, covered pots so you can take your home made goodness out and about, bibs). I found that pureeing baby food using a blender was too time consuming (really hard to get all those bits cleaned) and I bought a potato ricer, this was great as it meant I could put little bits from our normal cooked meals through it so baby could eat 'normal' food with us. Like this http://www.lakeland.co.uk/potatoicer...potato%20ricer

My youngest is 9 now though so I'm sure there are other 'must haves' come on the market in the intervening years.

My sister bought me a Miracle Blanket - and it was BY FAR my most used & favorite gift!! It's a swaddling blanket & definitely amazing.

My list would be:
1. Miracle Blanket
2. Flannel Burp Cloths
3. A swing (one that plugs in, not running on batteries)
4. A nice nursing cover (if you are going to bf)
5. Monitor (I used an Angel Care - it comes with a sensor pad that will send an alarm if baby stops breathing for 30 seconds... it really eased my mind because I was terrified of something happening to her in the night).

And I totally agree with others, who mentioned stuff for when baby gets a bit older. I asked for a few sippy cups, spoons, bowls, etc. It was awesome to not have to buy that stuff when she needed it. I also bought a Magic Bullet for blending her baby food (there is NO comparison from fresh verses jarred baby food!), and I loved it - I still use it... definitely worth is for only $35!

1. a swing that goes BOTH ways...my boys preferred the cradle way
2. a boppy
3. an exersaucer
4. the boys loved their Bumbo seat
5. basket or something like that to keep all diapers needs, onsies, bibs, burp clothes downstairs too. We had stuff in our room, the baby's room and downstairs so it was always within reach.
6. our pack n play was a must...the boys always took their naps in it when they were newborns, then they went up to their room for naps when they got a bit older
7. some sort of crib music thing...we had the Baby Einstein turtle and the boys loved it
8. a small diaper bag and a much bigger one...one for quick trips to the store and one for day trips. We used both of ours ALL the time!
9. plenty of stain remover..you will use it!!
10. swaddle blankets
11. a monitor
12. a bouncer seat
13. lots and lots of bibs and burp clothes (we used white cloth diapers b/c they were soooo much thicker than regular burp clothes)

I am not sure when you are due but we used a Bundle Me with the infant carseat...we didn't get to use it that long b/c the boys outgrew their infant car seat during the coldest part of winter but are super excited we will get to use it the WHOLE winter this time around!!!

I could go on and on!!!

I am seriously making a list of everything that you guys are suggesting. I can't wait to go do the registry, it's killing me lol.

Kim, I'm due in February so one of those would definitely come in handy. We had one for my niece and I loved using it with her.

Rather than a Bundle Me, which can/will interfere with proper usage of the car seat harness and are not recommended at all by CPSTs (certified child passenger safety technicians), you should check out something like the Posh Pouch or even this. Baby gets to stay warm and cozy as well as safe. In essence, if it goes under the baby or has to have the straps routed through it and it didn't come with the seat--don't use it.

http://www.car-seat.org/index.php is a great resource for all sorts of information about, well, car seats!

Definitely consider adding things that will be used a couple months down the road. I got a lot of 0-3 month clothes but it would have been more practical to have larger sizes. I found that I didn't need a lot for my baby until he was around 3 months old. Things that we couldn't live without now are the jolly jumper, exersaucer, swing and front carrier. Consider adding small items such as socks and shoes as well.

I don't really have anything to add for your registry... lol, I think it's all been covered! But a few things I didn't think to get (not really registry items, I don't think) were a snot sucker, fever meds, and general health care stuff. I totally panicked the first time the girls got a fever and I had no meds, and no clue what to give them because I hadn't looked into any of that stuff. You may not need all of it right away, but it's good to have it on hand when you do need it. I also got a ton of shampoo, baby oil, lotion and wash at my baby shower, and it was so nice to have a big stock of it already on hand - one less thing to forget at the grocery store!

I can't wait to hear what you're having!!!
