Default Dumb Questions about Photoshop

I have just got PSCS4 Extended installed finally and I used to use Photoshop Elements 6.

My question so far is

How do I get a paper/element from the original file it is in to my blank canvas? I've tried dragging it from one to the other but it doesn't seem to work.

Go under Edit, Preferences, Interface. UNCHECK Open Documents As Tabs & Enable Floating Document Window Docking..see if that fixes your problem..you might have to restart PS

I think I have figured out the color profile issue I was having before but I am still not 100% sure I am using the right color profile for my 12x12 canvases.

Now I have a new error when shifting a paper from its original file to the new file I have made - what have I done wrong. I'm thinking it is color profiles again as that is the only thing I have fiddled with myself

Should be at the the very bottom, looks like a square with a corner folded up or the shortcut key: CTRL + SHIFT + N

I just added a new layer by going Layer > New Layer and I don't see anything in the layers palette to show I have a new layer - what have I done wrong?

Your layers palette is collapsed...double click on the dark gray bar with the tabs at the top of the palette and it should open up..

Thanks Traci - now you know why I have named this thread the way I have. On Mondau I am going to the library and picking out some CS4 books so the questions should subside then.

I would say your new document is too big. Make sure it's 12x12in 300ppi or 3600px

In PSE I used to be able to resize by dragging the handles that would appear but now I don't see them - do they exist, if they do how do I find them?

I'm sure I will come up with some equally dumb questions tomorrow

Hey Jennifer! I jsut switched over to PS from PSE recently too and I had all these same questions!! i still refuse to accept these "new" things and i hate not having a Project Bin like we did in PSE! lol. I even edit my photos in PS, then build my LO is PSE, save it, and then re-open it in PS to adjust the shadows and do anything else that can't be done in PSE. LOL.

As far as the handles go that you are asking about, in your last screen shot you posted, in the toolbar across the top of PS you need to have the "Show Transform Controls" box checked. it will bring up the handles for you to adjust everything!

Sorry I didn't make it back here again last night - got sidetracked lol CS has a huge learning curve, but once you've got it down it'll seem like old hand. .. I think you got every question answered so far?
