Default Enlarged Uterus?

My sister and her DH are trying to have a baby. I'm not sure how long they have been trying (my sister and I are not close), but maybe a couple months. Anyway, she was supposed to start AF around Thanksgiving and did not. She took 3 pg tests over the course of a week, but all tested negative. She went to the doctor this past Tuesday, where she still tested negative, and the doctor said she has an enlarged uterus. She is scheduled for an u/s on the 21st to check for cysts. She said that she has never missed AF (like since she first started in middle school) before this past month.

I did some research online re: enlarged uteruses (uteri? *lol*), but wanted some RL experience from y'all. Do any of you have an enlarged uterus? What was the cause or causes? Were you able to successfully conceive despite having one?

[She is 26 years old and overweight with some IBS/lactose issues, but otherwise healthy. She does not have any biological children of her own.]

She is definitely a worst case scenario person and will make herself sick with worry until she has the u/s, so any advice or positive stories I could pass along to her would be great.

Fibroids, maybe? Does she have heavy painful periods? My mom had fibroids (at around 36/37/38) and it "enlarged" her uterus and she had terrible periods. She ended up with a hystorectomy....but mine you this was in 1978 and after 6 kids!!!

I have a friend same sort of problems - has she ruled out Polycystic ovary syndrome?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polycystic_ovary_syndrome

Really really common in people who are overweight and have problems getting pregos

My guess would be fibroids as well..they can get really big and cause missed periods..i have them but mine are usually pretty small...they're the reason my mom had to have a hysterectomy at 45 though b/c hers were very big and causing lots of issues.

I would think either endo or fibroids.

Thanks, guys. That's what I was afraid of. I already feel guilty that I had an unplanned pg with DD and an easy pg and L & D, and she hasn't even been diagnosed with anything yet!

My mom is not helping the situation, either, as she's been telling my sister that 'women in her family never have m/c' and 'women in her family are great child-carriers.' Sigh.

Oh. I wish your sis the best. I haven't had problems getting pregnant but something always sneaks up when I am carrying the baby[ies]. My mom sounds like yours in that sometimes her mouth runs away with her. I think it is wonderful that though you are not close you are trying to help her out.

They can't get her in sooner? Maybe she could get on a list if they get a cancellation in the middle of a day. I needed an U/S and got in same day ... in fact within less than 2 hours ... and that has been the way it has been any time I needed one ... can she try another facility?
