Default Food Poisoning vs. Stomach Virus

So we had dinner with some friends Monday night, and their kids had the stomach bug Friday & Sat. Our friends cleaned & disinfected on Sunday, and everyone was healthy when we went over there Monday night.

Tuesday night I cooked a dish with ground pork. For my in-laws. A couple of hours after they went to bed, both of my children woke up puking their guts up.

How do I know if I caused this or if they caught it from our friends? Joel & I aren't throwing up yet, and since it's 2:36 am, I don't know about my in laws, but if Joel & I get it, is there any chance it could it be from our friends? And if my in laws are throwing up, could they have caught it from us after we caught it from our friends?

I AM MORTIFIED at thought of having poisoned my inlaws the ONLY time I have actually cooked for them since we have been home this year. When our second child started throwing up, the first thing Joel said was, "You DID cook that pork all the way through, right?" OMG, I sure hope so! Is there any way to know exactly how the crazies got sick? Are the symptoms of food poisoning different than the symptoms of the stomach virus?

I would say that it is the virus, it sounds like the right lenght of time for it to have incubated before they got sick. I would go with that anyway because you don't want to admit to poisioning the inlaws! LOL!

I would think it's the virus too...You would probably have noticed if the pork was undercooked.

I hope they get better quickly and that no on else gets sick!

If undercooked meat would do this, the French would suffer from these symptoms all the time. :-)

Sounds like a virus to me, too.

But I know how you feel, this happening when you wanted to give a good impression and all. *hugs*

This happened to us when we hosted a Christmas dinner a few years ago. Some relatives that had just have a stomac bug came over because they had recovered. However, 2 days later, many of us got sick from the same bug.

Usually, you are still contagious up to 48 hours AFTER recovery from a stomach bug.

This is so true and how the tummy flu spreads like wildfire. Disenfecting doesn't really help either because some of them can be airborne viruses.

I just wanted to add that stomach bugs are going around like crazy here and i've heard in lots of other places too.... so I'd say there's a good chance that's what it was/is!

In my experience food poisoning happens VERY quickly after eating. If it's the violent kind. I got it at a resteraunt and was puking my guts up on the way home from said resteraunt. I would say they got a bug.

I would too think it is a virus... my experiences with food poisoning is that happens very close to after eating... and it's like once you "get rid" of it, you feel better.

Hope all are feeling better and that you and hubby don't get it!

Food poisoning is usually about 4-6 hours after eating and it's very possible that the kids were affected because they're kids, but I'm not en expert Pork is one meat that you can have a little rare but I'm not sure with ground pork. I'd go with the stomach bug!

I was going to say that some of those germs could be air borne too. So sorry your family has the sickies. Hope everyone is feeling better soon.

I hope you all feel better soon. Maybe ask your friends how long the symptoms lasted so you know what to expect?

We had this happen on a camping trip. One of the kids threw up on Saturday afternoon. On Sunday evening me, my DH, and the mom of the other kid were violently sick (vomiting, diarrhea etc..) My kid did NOT get sick. We thought for sure we had the 'bug' but realized that the 3 of us were the only ones that ate lunch meat out of the cooler. It was food poisoning caused by the lunch meat and the sick kid on Saturday was just a fluke.

Our food poisoning happened about 4-6 hours after we ate the bad food. Everyone who had eaten it got violently sick at the same time! And, in my experience, food poisoning comes out both ends!
