Default Spin-off: Starting the New Year

Darcy's thread about taking down decorations got me to thinking... my mom always had us kids cleaning on New Year's Eve because she believed that if your house wasn't clean on New Year's Day, it wouldn't be clean all year. I know that's an old wives' tale, but there is something to be said for starting the new year with a clean house. So, yes, my tree is down, my house is fairly clean and I'm contemplating taking on another reorganization project this week to finish it all up.

Anyone else have other new year's traditions? What must be done before the clock strikes midnight on Dec. 31?

We try to clean out everything we don't want or need for the next year before New Year's Eve so it can all get donated to Good Will. It gets it out of the house and gives us a nice receipt for our taxes.

Maybe my house never stays clean because it's not clean on New Year's day? Wish I would have figured that out years ago!!! LOL!

LOL! Love it!

I don't have any cleaning traditions, but I like the idea of getting everything dontated to finish up those Goodwill receipts for the year. Maybe I'll start working on that today.

Maaaaybe.

We always have a clean house for New Year but I think it's more that people might pop in to see us so we clean everything in sight just in case

We do nothing else for New Year other than clean teh house and maybe have a drink or two and eat something nice. We definitley are not party animals, I'll be in bed before midnight

no cleaning things...

Our major tradition for New Years Eve is that we have to eat one piece of herring per month of the next year by the stroke of midnight.... to ensure good fortune for the coming year. I have no idea as to where this tradition came from, it's just something that my family has always done... and even though I loathe herring... loathe like I rather have a root canal... I don't stop because I don't want to take a chance incase there is something behind that.

We don't do anything on New Years Eve but on New Years Day we eat black eyed peas for good luck and cabbage for money.

We usually have a nice dinner and have friends over. The kids have a "mock" new years midnight for the kids at like 9pm and then we play games. On New Years day we do the black eyed peas and something green for food.

My mom cooks black eyed peas every New Years for good luck...She also has to cook pork of some kind...I have no clue why...I just enjoy whatever meal she cooks

I try to make sure all my bills are paid in full before the New Year...
