I have only read the first two books (long ago) and seen bits and pieces of a few of the movies. My seven year old, however, is really into Harry Potter. He is almost finished with the third book and has seen the first five movies. My question is, how much darker are the last two movies? He just watched the fifth one and wasn't disturbed by it at all. I didn't see all of it, but was fine with what I did see of it. He would be thrilled to get the next movie for his birthday in a couple of months, and I'm just wondering if he's too young... And yes, I realize I could just watch the movie first, but I'd still like to hear your opinion

My six-year-old was a bit freaked out by the snake - that was the only thing that phased him, otherwise both my boys (6 & 8) loved both the Deathly Hallows films. There is a lot of action, fighting, and some sad scenes. Yet, it was me and my husband getting teary rather than the kids!

I am a huge harry potter fan, but I have only let my 9 and 8 year old boys (and the 6 year old for that matter) watch the PG rated movies. The last 2 movies are especially violent and troublesome in my opinion. We don't let them watch any PG 13 movies, so we do not make an exception for Harry Potter. I love the books and the movies, but in movie form the books take on a whole new realness. Just my opinion.

My 9 year old is very afraid of scary movies, but he loved the Harry Potter ones (although he was afraid of the big snake too). I think it helped that we read all of the books first, so he knew what was going to happen and he really wanted to see the movies (he usually doesn't even want to go to anything remotely scary).
Still, in the very begining of the Deathly Hallows (part 1), you see Voldemort torture and murder a woman and then tell the snake to eat her. It's not bloody, but it's still pretty brutal. And a lot of people get killed. So, yes, I do think they are darker than the previous movies. |

MY kids (8 & 4) frequently watch movies 1-5 with me, but I'm hesitant to let them see the others. Some kisd may be fine with them, but there are many scenes in the last three that I know my kids would struggle with.
I think asking him to read the books first would be a great idea - he'll be more prepared for what's coming, and of course will be older by the time he's done lol

And in the last one...with the death of one of the major characters...the scene is pretty intense (to me for a 7yo). It isn't quick, it's bloody even though you only see the blood, and the death scene lingers for a bit.
I'd really suggest reading them first, too. |

my husband took my 6 year old to see the last one (against my wishes) and she had nightmares for 2 nights. he also took my 6 year old nephew and he was totally unaffected by it. he said it was 'the coolest movie EVER'.

We have not started reading the HP books with DS for this reason. I know I'd be bothered that I could only watch up to Year 4 and then no further so I figured he would too. My cousin suggested that we should start with one a year and that way by the time he's on the scarier stuff, he's way older. Not sure how much you could apply that concept now that you've already started reading/watching the stories.
