Default Have you ever deleted kits/elements??

SERIOUSLY!?!?!? I dont know if I'm weird or what but even the thought of this almost gives the hoarder in me palpitations . . lol . . I'm a horror hoarder, but feel completely justified in my digital hoarding 'cos it takes up very little space and doesnt look messy

But really - have you deleted, what did you delete and did you regret it????

Yep - I do it often I clean out stuff that I'm NEVER going to use, old stuff that's no longer my style (or ever was..sometimes just wishful thinking). I don't ever regret it.

But I'm a tosser like that (just in the good way)

I do... about 3-4 times a year I do a big purge of stuff... the only folder I have a hard time purging is my alphas folder.

OMGosh no.

Like you it gives the digihoarder in me the sweats just thinking about it.

the worst part is that I KNOW I won't use it but then I think "Well what if, just what if, I decide to use it years from know"

It's a sickness.

I pitch stuff. Especially stuff I got when I first started. Though I haven't pitched any SSD stuff.

I think this very much depends on whether you received stuff as a CT member / babe or whether you bought it. It's easier to delete if you didn't pay for it.

That said, I *do* purges from time to time - when I started digi-scrapping, I wasn't really wise about my choices and I got rid of most old stuff that didn't really match my style. And even these days sometimes I buy a kit and it doesn't really meet my expectations (previews are not always reliable).

It's kinda healthy to do it from time to time, just like getting rid of stuff in your flat/house (that you also paid for, and yet there's a limit to how much you can really need/use).

I just buy a bigger server... lol!

I've only purged freebies and things I purchased when I first began and didn't know what was good quality (pre-coming to SSD)... I have dismantled some kits - kept the theme elements and pitched the rest. However, I'm not an a regular schedule with it...

When I first started scrapping I bought a few things from here but mostly my stuff was from 2 other places and when I went back to my EHD at the start of the year I hadn't even used most of the stuff so I deleted it all and only kept some of my SSD stuff.

Since then I go back and look through everything and if I know I won't use it again I delete it, that's not very often though.

I keep all my current stuff in my SSD folder. That's 99.9% SSD and a few things from other places that I got. But I only buy kits from SSD, sometimes templates from other places.

I know that I won't use the stuff in my other folders, I just can't bring myself to delete it. I wish i could because I know I won't use it but alas, the hoarder in me wins out.

But I can not delete SSD stuff, nope, I just can't do it.

Actually, I'll disagree with this... those are the hardest for me to purge... I feel like I'm disappointing the designer when I delete of kit of theirs... not that they know I'm doing it, but I build amazing relationships with those I CT for and I just feel really really guilty, so I keep them even though it might not be something I'd normally keep if I weren't on their CT.

The ones I buy are the easiest for me to purge... when I've used it and I know I've gotten my money's worth out of it, it's easy for me to delete if I know I'm not going to use it again or it's not my style anymore.

Interesting. But it makes sense. :-) I tend to be cautious with deleting because I tend to go back to older ones and re-use, but with some you just know you won't use them - those are the ones that get ditched.

I totally agree with this. I still have kits from my very first CT, even though I know, 100% sure, that I'll never use them again. I should just delete it, but I feel like I'm letting her down, or throwing away a gift.

I've been known to throw away (or give away) gifts that I didn't like (not with a happy heart and without saying it to the giver of course), so I assumed it was easier to ditch CT stuff. All taken back now. It was a wrong logic anyway, because it's easier to throw away stuff I bought myself than to throw away gifts. :-)

I don't delete CT kits, for the most part, because I think what if I need it again. You know, for a blog post or a challenge, or I need an element that isn't in the new kit.

I do get rid of stuff. The Fly Lady says we shouldn't be surrounded by things that make us feel guilty or keep us from being free. Unused kits make me feel guilty, so I stopped buying so many kits a while back and just took the plunge and deleted the ones that made me groan inside about using.

Now, I back everything up to my 1 TB EHD and only keep things on my HD that I love. And every once in a while I go through my EHD and delete the stuff I know I will never use again.

It's so freeing. You should try to start by backing up to disc the things you think you can live without. If you don't even think about them in a few weeks/months, you can toss the CD.

I think the most important part of it all is not feeling guilty. About anything. Deleting or not deleting. It's just stuff. It's just a hobby. No place for guilt. And whatever you do, don't compare yourselves with others. There's no right approach to this. Just one that works for you. Amen.

Nope... but I only started in May, only shop here, and don't have a huge amount of kits (yet). I am the anti-horder when it comes to my house. If I get stressed, I start throwing stuff out, but I don't think this translates over to my EHD. I guess we will see. For now, I keep everything organized and it doesn't really bother me.

when i started i downloaded loads of free stuff. i have since deleted it.
i need to seriously look at what i have and find a better org system. i can't keep up with acdsee anymore. so i might go to just using the preview and tagging that. we'll see.

i do have to do a massive purge soon as well. this might be a job for xmas break.

I'm not quite as ruthless as Tanya. But I delete things I wouldn't use as soon as I unzip them. Solid papers I keep for about 6 months. By the time I've had it for 2 years it's been completely dismantled and there is very little left of it.

Yes.

I delete all the shadowed elements and weird extracted things (like bears and stuff --- which doesn't usually happen here at SSD). I will also delete some duplicates if a kit has, say, the same button in 8 colors. If a paper or alpha is particularly obnoxious, I will also delete it.

I don't believe I have any scrapping stash pre-2009, but if one or two things remain, it is a very specifically themed kit and/or an alpha I have yet to find something comparable to.

I don't usually buy kits, so if I delete it or am thinking abt deleting it, there is a very very good chance I got it for free and have already used it once. This frees me from the guilt. Besides, it's not like you get the money back if you use it or spend the money again if you don't, kwim?

I delete all the time...if i DL and I don't think I'll use it now that I look at it up close, meh! Into the trash it goes! Sometimes I'll keep the illustrations or the alpha and put them in a themed folder but otherwise, why keep it if I won't use it?

I realize though that this would be different if I didn't have access to this lovely shop and had to pay for the things I DL.

Every 6 months I move stuff I haven't used (assuming it isn't a holiday kit) into a 'delete on insert date 3 months from now" folder. If I used it I take it out of the folder. Otherwise, on that date, I delete the folder without opening it. Mostly kits. I have a harder time purging element sets & even worse time with alphas. I copy alphas out of some kits before dropping them in the delete folder because I think I might use them later.

I really ought to just suck it up and purge the alphas. Maybe I'll do that today

Yep, I do a major purge about twice a year. Even then, my stash is a "modest" size of about 150GB.

I used to delete all the time. But then I had an EHD and laptop total crash and lost EVERYTHING so now i back up everything to my 2 EHD's and burn to disc. I burn to disc by designer or theme (if i have enough theme kits to fill the disc) and then they are stored safely and never see the light of day just in case I ever have a crash again.

I suffer terribly from the "what If?" dilema not only in dgiscrapping but in most aspects of my life and thinking about deleting kits really makes me nervous lol x

Oh just saw the CT question. I've deleted kits from CTs I've left--not everything, just a few that now don't jive with my style. This is reflective of when I first started CT'ing and I was still LOOKING for a style. I'm happy though that I have a LOT of older CT kits that I still love and occasionally use

This is me too. I did a big purge earlier this year but it's probably getting to be time to do another. I am an equal opportunity delete, so anything - CTs, purchased, freebies - are all on the chopping block. If my first thought when I ask myself if I'll use a product is "no," to the trash it goes. If I'm unsure then I'll leave it until the next big purge.

What I really need to be better about deleting is photos...

I really need to do it but I haven't brought myself to do it yet...I bought stuff in my early digiscrapping days that just aren't my style anymore and I really can delete them...

I love to purge stuff - physical stuff around my house or stuff on my HD. I don't get very attached to things or my digital scrapbook supplies. If I know I'm not going to use it again, I'll delete it and not feel any guilt at all. It's not even about space because I have a 2 TB HD. lol I will also delete parts of kits that I don't like. There are a few kits that I pitched and just kept an alpha or a few elements I loved.

If it doesn't make me instantly happy, I delete it. I purge quite frequently, but I don't shop too often anymore, because I have gotten so stingy.

LOL, I was over at Me So Scrappy reading their series of articles about keeping to a budget, purging & cleaning out files, and all that stuff.

I've been oh-so-slowly going through my files and deleting files that were freebies that I know I'm not ever going to use due to time or inclination. If they're kits, I move the items in the kits that I want into my Elements/Frames/Word Art/etc folders and then out it goes. But I confess that I hesitate to delete kits I've bought because usually I've bought them for a reason, or because I liked them, and often enough, I WILL find a page I want to use them on. I have stopped buying from designers when I have enough, or their creativity has gone down a bit, or I start seeing a LOT of CU files repeating, like those bird buttons, or buttons, or ribbons or strings.

But purging kits I've used only once or twice? Eeeeeek!

I never ever ever delete elements out of a kit, because I know there have been times that I haven't been into using one thing, and then 6 months later, rarely use it and almost exclusively use something I hated before, because scrappers I love to imitate use that instead. Then, 6 months later, I may go back to my original love. I keep the whole kit, or I don't buy it.

I have, however, deleted a few kits. I have only deleted free kits that I'm certain I'll never use. For awhile, before I ever paid for a kit, I had just about every freebie ever. Every day I would search for freebies, and every day I would download a mishmosh of items. I think I did more downloading than I did scrapping at first. After I started buying kits, I stopped getting so many freebies, because I didn't like their quality in a lot of cases, or they weren't my style.

I'm glad I've purged things I KNOW I won't use, but I also don't feel bad about getting rid of them because I spent nothing on them.

I do hold onto some things I know I'll never use (from old stores I used to shop at and things), but I hate to get rid of them, just in case. I need to do a big purge. That takes a lot of time and effort that I'd rather spend scrapping, though.

I have my digi stuff on my laptop, and it's all on an EHD as well for backup. If I don't think I'll use something anymore, I delete it from the laptop but keep it on the EHD for a while. 99% of the time I can go back to it a year later and say, "Of course I won't use it again" then delete. But I have to let it sit there a while; there's no going back and deleting 3 months later for me. I mostly have SSD kits and non-SSD CT kits on my laptop now, though I have template packs and element packs from all over.

aaaaaaargh *faints*

I never really thought about getting rid of stuff before, but I completely get why some of us do . . I am actually thinking about deleting some freebie kits that make me shudder when I open them by mistake . . LOL . . I have heaps from when I first started digiscrapping . . but I will probably burn them to disc first . .

just in case . . hehehe (pathetic huh) . . I dont try to fight my hoarding demons anymore, we're on the same side now
