My 9 year old wants pink streaks. I'm okay with it as long as I find something that is pretty temporary (I'd like it to last through a couple of washings but not for months or anything). Anyone have suggestions? Also, must be easy to apply because I'm no hair stylist and have NEVER done any coloring or the likes at home (in fact, I've had highlights once but that's all).

I dont do the real thing with my children or my hair. I talked with my hairdresser a year or so ago and she said that it takes a lot of upkeep and redying of the colors to keep them bright and not so dull. Basically, they have to bleach the hair and then add the color.
With my children and my own hair, we get the colored fake extensions. I've gotten some from Claire's in the mall, even to just getting colored streaks in our hair at Great Wolf Lodge this past week! They are temporary, you can take them out as you need to wash, trim/style them. They are a lot of fun without damaging anyone's hair. Good luck. My oldest had been begging for years to have a pink streak...this past Summer was the first time that we started doing the hair extensions and she loves it! If there is a Sally Beauty Supply store around they have some great temporary hair color products in some wild colors that are super easy to apply. Most last about 4-5 washings, much less if you go swimming. Pretty much it's just section off the hair you want to streak, squeeze some color out of the already mixed bottle, spread it over the hair, wrap some plastic wrap around that piece and wait however long, then rinse. Temporary color will not be as vivid unless she has blond hair, you need to bleach the streaked hair first to get that vivid color.

Also, if her hair is really light blonde, the color (even temporary color) could stain her hair and wind up being more permanent than you're looking for.

we use stuff from hot topic on my teenage stepdaughters hair. it lasts one to two washes and is pretty cheap(like $5 for a bottle that does 15-20 applications)

She has reddish brown hair. I know nothing I use will be too bright but there is no way I am bleaching it first. I don't want anything harsh. What is hair chalking? Never heard of that but it sounds interesting.

Is your daughter in a public school? My friend's DD is not allowed to do that so they have their fun with her hair in the summer.

I'll check out the video, thanks!
Designer5 - yep, she's in public school but it isn't something they have banned or even discouraged. We had a little boy show up today (I work at the 2nd and 3rd grade building, my daughter is in 4th at a different building) with bright green hair in a mohawk. His classmates oohed and aahed over it for about 10 seconds and that was the end of that. |

Sorry I can't help you. I only trust my stylist to put my pink in because I'm scared I'd totally mess up my hair. LOL
