Fun Fact Friday
Give me your fun facts. They can be about you, the world around us, useless and interesting information, whatever.
Did you know the hashtag symbol is technically called an octothorpe? According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, the "octo-" prefix refers to the eight points on the popular symbol, but the "thorpe" remains a mystery. One theory claims that it comes from the Old English word for "village," based on the idea that the symbol looks like a village surrounded by eight fields!

In line with this... my son apparently has enough clothing that he doesn't have to do laundry for a month.

I realized this was my son's goal too and I regret the last time I bought him some clothes. He proudly stated he had enough clean still just the other day when his room was like a literal bomb of dirty laundry!

Fun. Always learning something new. I didn’t know that about hashtags.
I was looking this up to tell Nathan: A praying mantis lays around 180 eggs. Only about 5 of the babies usually survive.

In Victorian England... people would say "prunes" when taking a photograph as it would tighten the lips. It wasn't until Kodak came out with their camera for the masses and in the 1920's it became more common to smile for the camera.

Random fact:
Australia is almost the same size as the United States. This blew me away when I found out as although Aussie is big, I never thought it was that big!

See? You did it too! I think we should all take "prunes" selfies and make a page with them! Prunes challenge! Extra credit if you dress up like a Victorian!

I wonder why they chose that word… they could have said “soon” or “vacuum”… (was that even invented yet?) I always thought those in pictures looked constipation, maybe that is why they were thinking of prunes.

My oldest teenage boy fits all the stereotypes, but Max, who is 15, has a little OCD and goes through more hand soap in his bathroom than the rest of us do in the whole house combined. He keeps his room clean and puts away his dishes. His number one complaint about sharing a room with his big brother for the last year was that Jack farts all the time, and the thing Jack likes best about being on his own now that we're gone is that he can fart whenever he wants. Sometimes I think they choose the things they like/hate just to be the opposite of each other!

Where I work we have an automated system that calls people to offer shifts to work. I send out the information to people, and 3 times this past year I've sent out instructions to tell people they need to press "pound" after the number, then had to explain what pound was, and they said - oh, so the hashtag. Makes me feel old lol

This thread is making me giggle! "Pruuuuuunes..."
I learned a new word this week: contranym. Synonyms are two words with a similar meaning, and antonyms are two words with opposite meanings; contranyms are a single word that has two opposite meanings. For example: cleave. It can mean to join together (they were cleaved as man and wife) or to separate (they cleaved his head from his body). Or dust. It can mean to sprinkle with a powder (dusting the cookies with powdered sugar) or removing powder (dusting the shelves). I'm a total word geek, so learning this made my day! |

Well, since I'm binge watching onto Crime Junkie (re-listening) and Cold Case Files, I learned that 'AMBER Alert' came to be for two reasons, in honor of a girl named Amber Hagerman who was abducted in 1996 and also an acronym for America's Missing Broadcasting Emergency Response. I also learned the history of 'Miranda Right' because of Ernesto Miranda. I also learned that there were over 120,000 cases in America and only 1% of those cases were solved.
