Default OT: Vacuum Cleaners?

After 11 years of marriage, our vacuum cleaner died this morning so I need to buy a new one. After a quick search, I've discovered there are ALOT of vacuum cleaners out there. Any quick suggestions? And I don't want to spend a ton of money!

They aren't cheap, but I've heard absolutely nothing but good about Dyson vaccuums! I want to get one and we're going to get one next time, even DH agrees! I figured it would be a waste because we have mostly laminate in our place now...only 2 rooms have carpet...but it will do hard floors as well...score!

Hopefully next month I will have a Dyson. Costco has one for $355 which seems like a pretty good deal!

I want a Dyson but I don't vacuum so it's not my choice. Jeff does all the vacuuming. he says that I vacuum wrong. I'm not quite sure how that is possible, but hey, I don't have to vacuum so whatever.

I have a super cheap vacuum but I love it anyway. I actually gave away a much more expensive vacuum to buy this one after using it at a friend's house.

We have a Dirt Devil (from Walmart of course) and love it...it picks up tons of pet hair (3 cats and a big dog).

Okay, I have a Dyson and really I don't think it's a great vacuum. It was certainly better than my old one and at first I tried to justify the cost by saying that I loved it... but really it's not worth that price at all. I don't feel it handles well, it doesn't amazing suction, and it really has the worst accessory attachment (you have to remove the handle to use an accessory). Don't fall in love with the concept of a Dyson because it's not 'all that'. I just peeked at Consumer Reports and they say this Kenmore vacuum is tops for upright vacuums. I wish I could do it over again and get that instead. Good luck on vacuum shopping!!

I have had like 3 Dirt Devils in the last 8 years...I absolutely hate them! We've never gotten one that works properly. They just seem to move the dirt around instead of sucking it up, and the belts fall off all the time...they've made me crazy!!

I can't brag about my vacuum enough! We have a Miele and so does my mom (she has a different model but has had hers for YEARS). Here is what I have!

I scrimped and saved for a Dyson, found a refurbished one online for a great deal, bought it and have NEVER been sorry that I did. It's the best vacuum cleaner ever. It still works as well now as it did when we first purchased it and I'm completely in love with it.

I have old old worn out carpet. The way it works makes the carpet look just a tiny bit newer/better again which is ALWAYS a good thing. And it picked up so much stuff that our previous vacuums never did. Strange story - our black, long hair cat had been gone for about a year when I got the dyson. I had vacuumed faithfully. When we tried out the Dyson, there was so much of her hair in the canister, and other dirt that it picks up that conventional vacuums don't seem to be able to) that I went through 2 canisters in doing the house. And I vacuumed twice a week before so it's not like I hadn't vacuumed in three months.

okay, I admit, I'm stunned you all like your Dysons. Why can't I love mine?? It cleans the floors but I don't think it is worth the money at all.

Love my Dyson as well, going on 5 years strong. It has been the only thing to get the pet fur out of our couch. But I totally understand how the price can be too high.

We use a little dirt devil for our upstairs room and our hardfloors since it maneuvers much easier in tight spaces. But every once in a while I use the Dyson (when I lug it up stairs) to get the deep down dirt. And yeah it get's it out. And the filter is washable as well. I just wish they would come out with a more "economical" version for those who can't spend $350 or more on a vacuum.
