Recently, I've been reading a bunch of books that "make you think." I have really enjoyed them, but I need something a little less cerebral for a change. So, I'm asking for suggestions.
I want a relatively short book (300 pages or less); no romances or chick lit; a good engaging story; must be well written, but not so well written that I have to put on my English major hat and think about the writing. Just something fun that I can get through pretty quickly. I don't want to use my brain too much, but I don't want to lose brains cells either. Lol. And . . . GO!

Have you read The Storied Life of A.J. Fickry? Although, I'm not sure it rises to the level of fluff, it is excellent and your brain doesn't have to work too hard.

I tend to grab Grisham when I need to get absorbed into a story and just have all my thoughts handed to me.
![]() If you like mysteries; Still Life by Louise Penny is the first in a good series. Last edited by Misty Cato; 03-31-2015 at 12:40 PM. |

Oh also, Memoirs of an Imaginary Friend is good. It will make you think a little, but you don't have to work for it and it's an easy read.
I'll stop now. |

Haha. Thanks, Misty. I think Grisham is a pretty good suggestion. Even if they are a little longer, I think they go pretty quickly when you're engrossed in the story.
Feel free to keep going. ![]()

I really enjoyed The Ultimate Gift. You can read it in a day, but it's awesome. Uplifting too. There are 2 more books in the series. Ultimate Journey and Ultimate Life.

Dont think they're under 300 pages, but I just finished The Name of the Wind and A Wise Man's fear and if you like fantasy and just great storytelling, they were wonderful! Nikki has mentioned them in her what are you reading threads recent too!

I'm the only one who feels like A.J. Fikry wasn't fluff?

I'm reading it now and it's definitely not in the fluff category for me.
I consider Janet Evanovich a good author of light, fluffy books. |

I know I'm in the minority but Janet Evanovich books drive me nuts. For me, they fall into the losing brain cells category.
AJ Fickry isn't fluff, but it's a pretty easy read, a great story and not overly cerebral so I thought it worthy of mention. |

Loved AJ Fikry too, and I agree with Misty, it wasn't fluff but it wasn't hard on the brain either, I call them palate cleansers after you have read a lot of really heavy stories. It was one of my favs!

Goodness, read that back and it sounds like I'm saying anyone who likes them is juvenile, not what I meant. Sorry if I offended anyone.

I think my definition of 'fluff' might be different that some other people's. I guess I don't really like 'fluff' books so this was an easier read for me. Like, I don't do Nicholas Sparks or the Twilight books or anything. I tend to read more intense fiction and non-fiction and Fikry was fun and warmed my soul

I think my idea of fluff lines up with what you gals are saying. I don't want it to be mindless, just not something that I really have to concentrate on to understand. No Dickens (who I absolutely love), and no Tolstoy. Lol.

Do you like Neil Gaiman? The Ocean at the end of the lane is really good..and The Graveyard Book. They are both under 300 pages. The Graveyard book is YA but sooo good.

And this book is total and complete fluff but I adored it. Think a dumbed down Jane Austen..but just what I needed at the time...

Here's the link to the page at Sourcebooks (publisher) I ordered mine from Amazon but I think they're roughly the same price at either place.

I'm always hesitant to ask for recommendations because I end up with too many ideas. Lol. I know I can always count on you gals to tack a few things onto my TBR list.

Thanks to all of you for your suggestions! I just finished reading The Ocean at the End of the Lane. It was the first book that I've read by Neil Gaiman and I really enjoyed it . . . just what the doctor ordered.
I'm on to Paper Magician next because I already had it in my Kindle stash. I also put a bunch of these other books on my TBR list, and have holds on a few others at the library. Thanks again for all the suggestions!
