![]() ![]() Every morning they take a lunch count of every class and send it to the office. It not only shows the count for bought lunches but the kids have 3 choices every day: Main Meal (it's usually like an entree you would get at a restaurant), a kid friendly meal (chicken fingers, toasted cheese, ect) and then a sandwich lunch. So it shows how many of each lunch they need. Well my poor sweet little man has last lunch of the day (a kindergartner of all things) at 12:45PM. And everyday he comes home and tells me that they have run out of this, that or the other for his lunch (like veggies, the fruit of the day ect). Well today was Spaghetti and Meat sauce and that is what he chose, but by the time he went to lunch they were out of everything and all he had was a PB&J sandwich and a carton of milk!!! ![]() I need/want to write his teacher but I need to know if I being unreasonable!?!?! Is this normal for every school? My 3rd grader has 1st lunch so of course she always gets all the food and my Jr. High DD always get all her food too. I could see it happening the first week or two of school as they get use to what the kids are going to eat but we are on week 6 of school and this is still happening!!! And I know it's not him because at first he wasn't asking for the food or picking it up but I talked to him and told him exactly what to do and what to say and I even had his sister sneak down during lunch one day and help him and she told me...."Mom, there is just no food left"!! ![]() How do you all think I should contact first about this: his teacher or the food service department?

I would contact the principle and let them know it is unacceptable. The teacher has nothing to do with it. Your paying the money and it's their responsibilty to supply the food. Zach has had last lunches twice and I've never heard him complain of his school running out of the choices. I'd definitely be complaining.

Poor guy! {and poor waste of money!} I would speak reasonably with the principal to try to help her see your pov.

I would definitely be calling the principal. AND the child nutrition person. AND the superintendent. Yeah, I would be raising hell.
Call call call. And then call some more. That is ridiculous. And those poor kiddos should be eating first. ![]() You can tell the officials that I said so too! ![]()

I would definitely call and it wouldn't be a very nice call. I would be beyond upset if my son didn't get to eat what was on the menu. What if you son didn't eat pb&j what would they have done not feed him. That is beyond unacceptable...

Totally not right!! As with the others... I'd go to "management" not the teacher.... AND I would be calling my school board representative.

wow that is tough. I know it happened sometimes with my kids. My one son liked when they had "lunchables" which wasnt an actual lunchable but more the schools version of it and they sometimes ran out. I remember when I was in school sometimes they ran out of certain foods and had to substitute. You could try to call the cafeteria and speak to the person in charge to find out what is going on but it probably wont do much good because I have a feeling this happens at alot of schools since I know it did for my kids. Howver I do know the government has guidelines on what a schol lunch is supposed to offer (like a certain amount of fruit/vegies etc) and if they are not meeting those requirements something should defenitely be done
ETA:My kids never didnt get to eat they just sometimes did not get the more popular foods (like the more kid friendly stuff). They always got a nutritional meal though. So if he isnt getting all his basic food groups in one meal then I would be upset over that but them running out of a certain thing is sometimes out of their control IMO. That was happening to my daugher the first two weeks of school. This year she has the late lunch (they are the last class to be served) and they were running out of things. Since she is kind of picky, there was one day that all she ate was salad and milk. I was really mad so instead of letting her buy lunch I packed her lunch for the next few weeks. Since then it seems they have fixed what ever the problem was with the food order and she seems to have no problems getting the hot lunch each day.
I would suggest writing a note to the teacher and principal and giving them a chance to fix the problem. If that doesn't work then take it higher. Good luck! |

Definitely contact the principal. It's not anything the teacher has any control over. And the principal can pull more strings/have more authority than the food services people.
That's horrible! Your poor kid!

I would complain too. If it were just an isolated incident here or there, that's understandable; but if it's a regular occurence and results in the kids not getting the nutritionally balanced meal they are supposed to get, that's unacceptable.

This has happened to my son a couple times. If it becomes a regular occurrence I will say something. I would contact food services first I think.
I'm not sure but I'm guessing that it happens b/c some kids end up changing their minds and do not get what they chose in the morning.

What's the point of the morning count if they don't cook enough to fill the orders? Something is wrong there. I would speak to the Principal, and if he doesn't do anything, keep calling whoever will listen. Poor kid.

I think you should talk to the principal. That is unacceptable. Not only do you pay in good faith for the lunches, they should be making enough to provide for all the kids there regardless of whether or not the kid eats it.

Good point!! They have no idea if a kid is allergic or not. I can't believe that the cafeteria even has peanut butter there with all the allergies to peanuts. Our school district sent us a letter the week before school started telling us NOT to pack peanut containing foods with our kids.

I would def be calling someone at the school. You would think they would have enough fruit/veggies to feed all the kids every day!
My kids arn't in school but I recently (2006) graduated high school and our schools never had this problem. My mom's cousins kids are in elemtary school and I've never heard her complaining about this ( and she is the type that complains about everything so her kids not getting lunch would be a huge complaint for her). What is the point of the morning count if they won't have enough food for when the last lunch comes in?

the others have already said it - but definitely call the principal! Our principal said at the beginning of the year that she would love to know from parents if they are unhappy about things. I think they prefer that to escalations above their head/outside of the school, so definitely start there!
and WOW - a kindergarten class eats LAST LUNCH??? are you kidding me?? My Kindergartener eats at 10:50! yours is eating at almost 1pm?? wow. Do they have snack time before lunch? |

yes, definitely call! I'd go to the principal with it, not the teacher. that is so weird they have the littlest ones go last.

What is the point of lunch counts? Obviously they are not being used to plan out how much food they need.
Call the principal, call the director of food services at the school. Are they getting the food already prepared from some central location? Is that why they want counts? Our school cooks on site & apart from once running low on nuggets they haven''t had a problem. And even they they just cut up breaded chicken patties as a replacement. |

whoa... $5. School lunch is $2.10 for elementary school kids here. I can't imagine paying $5!!

I totally agree with everyone else. My Kindergartner gets first lunch at 11:15 - and running out of food has never been a problem. Besides the fact that they are running out of food, why are the Kindergartners eating so late? I would definitely be contacting the principal first and see what happens. If nothing is resolved head on up the food chain and don't stop until someone listens and fixes the problem!!!

I just talked to my mom about this.. she is a cafeteria manager at an elementary school here. First off she said there is no way that kindy should be eating that late. Second she said there is NO reason for them to run out of food like that. She said it's only happened to her once in 13 years and that was because her order didnt' come in. She said it sounds like the manager either isnt' ordering enough food or not cooking enough. Call your principal, or go directly to the food service office for the district. Either way, totally not acceptable.

Like everyone else said, you aren't overreacting. Running out of a popular option once in a while is understandable, but not routinely.
I'd start with the principal, not over his or her head. It's the principal's school, and I think she should get a chance to make things right before you go over her head and complain about a problem she may not be aware of.

Omg I would be so ticked off. I would definitely go to the principal and see what can be done. I don't understand why the Kindergarten kids eat last, that makes no sense to me.

Principal. ...and definitely be asking **WHY** they are eating the last lunch ... it should be the oldest kids in school doing that.
My kids were picky and only ate hot lunch a few times a month ... on the days with their faves ... and they had run out of it a few times. I was pissed when I found out I paid FULL PRICE for a lunch and all they had was a piece of banana bread and milk because they didn't like the vegetable or the one main course that was left. They should have at least offered it as a "side item" rather than full price when it wasn't their fault the lunch they ordered wasn't available. blech

I don't even have kids and I am ticked at your school.
I do have a 3 year old niece and I would be having words with someone for sure if she was put in that situation.

Yes, I would definitely be ticked off too and definitely calling the school. And what's up with Kindergartners eating so late? My DD is in Kindy and they have last lunch at 12:30. They do have us supply the kids with a snack everyday but still - I can't figure out why you'd make the littlest eat last.
