Gas stoves?
I've only ever had crappy electric stoves before, and when we bought the house we bought all new appliances. The top is black and it collects dust like crazy, and the grates get crap on them, yes, I'm a messy cook. So, what do you clean that stuff with? That won't mess up the finish on the stove top or the grates? |

I have an old gas stove with like an enamel type finish and I use a washcloth with dishsoap. To get the grease that inevitably gets on the stove no matter what you do I use baking soda and a little water
ETA: Didnt see what kind of stove you said you have. Mine is off-white so dust does not show as much and we have metal burners (its gas but really old...from the mid 80's) Last edited by jessica31876; 11-30-2010 at 10:27 PM. |

We have a stove that's run on propane, and we use East Off.

I have found that baking soda cuts right through the grease. It does not scratch any of my finishes at all. I use it in the bathroom and in the kitchen as an abrasive cleaner/degreaser. I just put a little on a wet wash cloth and rub it on then wipe it off with a little water.

My mom has a black gas stove at her ocean house. She will never buy a black appliance again! (The one she just bought for her main home is stainless).
I'm not sure what she used to get rid of the grease, but after that she uses a microfiber cloth to 'polish' it!

That looks a lot like my store. Those grates drive me crazy. To REALLY clean it, I take it all apart and wash the pieces in warm soapy water. To clean the top, I'll use just soapy water to clean but I love the vinegar Windex to shine it when I finish. This stove really, really annoys me, though, in case that makes you feel any better.

I use oven cleaner on the grates when they get really bad. I'd love to buy new grates (ours is 17 years old), but I've never been able to find them.

Mine is gas so I just turn the heat up real high and burn off the gunk. For the rest of the stove I use Bar Keeper's Friend about once a month to get the grease build up off. I just use a soapy sponge for everyday cleaning.

We don't have a gas stove, but I leave the big messes for the cleaning lady!
