sad but not suprising. When I was a paper scrapbooker I was a subscriber and I loved it. I think I subscribed to 6 or 7 scrapping mags ... but then I discovered blogs ... and they're free

I love that mag, one of the few I kept my subscription to.

Wow, what a huge disappointment to the scrapbooking community as a whole. It's like it's not even a recognized hobby anymore. Or, has digital scrapbooking "stolen" too many paper dollars from the paper industries whose ads fuel the magazine??

I just saw this on Twitter. So crazy because I have a layout being published in that issue and I had no idea it'd be the last issue ever.
I would doubt it's due to digital scrapbooking. I was listening to an older episode of the Paperclipping Roundtable (I think from Dec?) and they said digital was only like 10% of the scrapbooking industry. I'd say it's more due to the decline of magazines in general with all the new media available now - their subscription/ad based business model just no longer works, especially when you can often buy much more targeted ad space for a lot less online. |

Congrats Lynette on your layout being published! I've been in there a few times - at the beginning. Cool that you are in their last issue. |

When the economy turned, the first thing most businesses did was decrease their advertising dollars. This hurts the print media first, then the printing industry after. The printing industry has taken a huge nose dive in the last 4 years or so (my Dad has been a printer his entire life and finally lost his job last year after his company had been barely making it for about 4 before that).
Magazines, in general, have been hard hit in the last 6 or 7 years - with so many major ones going under. And a relatively small hobby like scrapbooking (as compared to photography, or other more mainstream hobbies), was going to have a hard time sustaining 2-4 magazines during this time. I'm sad to see it go because it was my favorite of all of them. |

this makes me so sad. I love scrapbooking mags, and while I haven't subscribed in quite some time I do read it every month thanks to the library or buying issues that catch my attention.

oh gosh, what was that scrapbook mag that went under a year or two ago? Anyway, doesn't matter which one it was, but they switched my subscription to Paper Crafts without my approval. So I think they typically try to give you another mag, but it might not be one you are into.

Sigh. I'm really sad to hear that. For a long time they were my favorite. Much better and more inspiring than CK.

Bummer! That was the last "real" magazine I've been subscribing too. I'm probably the reason the print industry is going under LOL

So sorry to hear this. I have been a subscriber for at least 6 years and I am going to miss it. I also subscribe to CK but do not like it nearly as much.

That is sad; it was always my favorite mag. Scrapbooking in general seems to have gotten hit hard. We went from having two Scrapbook Gardens to zero and now no magazines. I'm assuming Making Memories and Scrapbook Trends went the way of SS and Etc? Haven't seen them around...

When I took a break it was '07 and everything was going strong. A lot happened while I was gone. But I found more inspiration in galleries than magazines which at the time was so much more paper friendly.

Well that's sad. I still get that one and I always enjoy looking through it. Seems like that's the way magazines are going nowadays.

That is sad. I really liked that magazine too. But I can see how the print industry has been really affected. I must admit, I don't often buy magazines anymore either when I can find more info online faster and for free.

It's not surprising. I think the advertising dollars just aren't there. I had a huge collection of magazines at one time and finally took most of them to Half Price books to trade in. I kept the last year's worth or so of Scrapbooks Etc. and Creating Keepsakes and all my Digital Scrapbooking Magazines. The rest, I just couldn't keep around any longer. Now, I do have a nice collection of scrapbooking books. MM did go out of business a few years ago but kept publishing books and I have bought those, although usually at Half Price books. I'll pick up CK books every so often if I have a coupon at Barnes and Noble or Hobby Lobby. (Michaels' and Joann's, etc., won't let you use coupons on books, but Hobby Lobby does.)
I get way more inspiration looking at the scrapbooking galleries here at SSD and all the portfolios here than I do at tiny little photos in the magazines though. |

poo. that was the only one I ever still looked at. But it had a lot of paper crafting and less and less scrapping and I just can't make my hands do what my brain sees inside it .. therefore the perfect fit of digital for me. But still, it was a very well put together magazine and really one of the best. Wonder if CK will go that way eventually? Or is it too much of a giant to go under?
