Need your thoughts and prayers please.
Some of you have seen a post or two on facebook. This is hard. Sigh.
Jeff (my husband for those who don't know)... he's been sick since october. Respiratory stuff. They kept telling him he had bronchitis and he has been on about 6 diff antibiotics. Sunday morning when he woke up he was coughing up mucus... and it had blood in it. We ended up in the ER they did an xray and more antibiotics and sent us home. Wednesday I was at work.. I got a text from him about 11 that said he was coughing up blood.. no mucus.. just straight blood. I came home and we went back to the ER. They finally did a CT scan on him. That CT scan found a mass in his lower left lung. It is squeezing his airway shut, he has about 25% lung function at this point. We were immediately referred to a pulmonary doctor and we saw him yesterday. This morning, they did a scope on him to check out the mass. He told us that we would know today if the mass was abnormal. Unfortunately, the mass is abnormal. Jeff has cancer. Tuesday morning we will find out what type of cancer it is and what stage and what our treatment plan is. The pulmonary doctor said he is fairly positive it is nonsmall cell cancer and since Laura and Meg have forbid me from googling anything, I called my dad and asked him and he said that was very good. Best kind of cancer to be dealing with. So there is that. They are hopeful that they can remove the mass via surgery, to where he will be cured. There is also the possibility that they cannot do surgery and we will have to do chemo/radiation. I'm REALLY hoping for the surgery. Please.. keep us in your thoughts and prayers. it's going to be an awfully long weekend and a long day monday. I'll update after I know something on Tuesday. Thanks everyone.

Sara,
I went through this in 2010 with my husband. His cancer was histiocytic sarcoma which is exceptionally rare. I know and understand all the feelings you're going through including the absolutely horrendous wait over a long weekend to get answers. I'm here for you both here and on FB (I'm going to friend request you now). Please please feel free to talk to me. I know the feelings you're experiencing and I hate that anyone has to go through that. |

Oh, Sara! How scary for you guys to be dealing with this. I'm so sorry! I will be praying for all of you as you go on this unwelcome journey. I sure wish I could drive up and give you a big hug.
Both my grandma and my step-FIL had masses in their lungs that turned out to be nonsmall cell cancer. Both had surgery, had it removed entirely, and never had to have any sort of chemo or radiation. The surgery was hard on them and the recovery as well but in the end, getting that clean bill of health was amazing. Theirs happened several years apart (step-FIL got sick after grandma had passed away... from heart failure, not cancer) but both of them did really well despite being up there in years. |

Sara, I know I am new here but I want to let you know that you and your entire family will be in my thoughts and prayers. Cancer has impacted almost everyone at some point so we can all relate to some extent. I pray that his specialist comes up with a great plan and that God will touch his body and provide healing. Big Hugs!

I just saw your FB post and responded but I'm sending my prayers and will definitely keep you in my thoughts. It sounds like the "best" worst case scenario if it is something that can be cured by surgery. ((HUGS))

Oh Sara, I'm so sorry! My heart goes out for you!
Our family just went thru it last year with FIL's cancer(lymph). So, I know how hard the waiting game is and how scary it is on whole family. Don't hesitate to ask for second opinion or third opinion until you get the info you're looking for. FIL had to go thru chemo treatment, but they have new meds for it now that were VERY gentle ( I guess as gentle as chemo can be) on him. He didn't have any hair loss, not much after effects compared to what I've heard of from other chemo patients. He was scheduled for 8 treatments and after 5 treatments, he was declared clear of cancer. It's been a year now that he's been cancer-free. I'll be thinking about you and your family! |

Oh wow, you all will definitely be in my prayers! Make sure to take care of yourself during this time, and vent/cry/scream at us when you need to...we're not going anywhere!
And I definitely agree...googling is not good, because there is SOOOO much inaccurate information. No use getting freaked out by wrong information. When you get an official diagnosis and are ready for more info, your hospital should be able to link you up with more information, and you can also get more info from the American Cancer Society.

I am so sorry to hear this Sara. No fun being in the cancer club. My boyfriend was diagnosed with thyroid cancer in January - he has had 2 surgeries and started radiation yesterday.
