Default Dish to pass

With Thanksgiving coming up here in the US, there are so many dishes I'm looking forward to! However, there's always something that just isn't as good as the rest. When you're at one of your holiday dinners, what's the one dish you're happy to pass on?

For me, it's mashed potatoes. Just plain potatoes mashed with milk and butter doesn't do it for me. I need some cream cheese and garlic or other seasonings mixed in to get my attention and most people don't make it that way so I skip those calories and splurge on the sweet potato casserole! I'm ok to skip the rolls, too. I'll get my bread calories from the stuffing!

I skip the gravy too. And even though I've been making and bringing candied sweet potatoes for a couple of decades now, I don't eat them.

I'll put the sweet potato casserole on my plate, but I wouldn't be sad if it wasn't there (My husband would, though, so I'm making it, haha)
Also, pumpkin pie is something I'll gladly pass on. But...my 12 year old wants to make pumpkin pie this week, so I'll definitely be having a big piece of it

Yes, that can get lumped (no pun intended) in with the plain mashed potatoes. Meh!

I didn't like/tolerate pumpkin pie until well into adulthood. I giant dollop of cool whip on top is a must!

I skip gravy.... I hate it....lol

And if I have pie, which I love, it must have lots of whipped cream... so much so it like a plate of whipped cream with a side of pie.....

Another vote for mashed potatoes. I'm not a fan of the texture. I had never had stuffing (dressing?) until I was an adult, but now it's my go-to substitute for mashed potatoes.

this is going to sound hateful but I am so glad I no longer have in laws - the dinner was always the same and I could pass on the entire thing
Looking forward to just a turkey sandwich with cranberry sauce on it LOL

Stuffing, however I love dressing. They are so completely different. It's just not the same as what I grew up with.

Cornbread dressing is made with cornbread, it's moist and so good, I'll eat it plain.

agreed. In general, mashed potatoes are just meh for me. My MIL does makes some good ones tho- she usually adds roasted garlic cloves and I'm pretty sure she boils her potatoes in cream- Her's I will eat!

I would also say sweet potato casserole (or at least the one full of brown sugar & toasted marshmallows.) I'd rather just have more pie for all that sweetness. I do love roasted yams or sweet potatoes but no one else does in my family so I never make them.

I can do without turkey! We haven't cooked a traditional thanksgiving in years. We have done Cracker Barrel or fixed Spaghetti (covid while we were in Florida with my inlaws). Last year we did a big breakfast....this year we did a big meal. We made roast beef, a small turkey breast, potatoes, green beans, stuffing, mac and cheese, cranberry sauce, rolls and 2 types of gravy.

Today I passed on the sweet potatoes, corn casserole, stuffing, & pumpkin pie. My mom doesn't like gravy so we never have it at holiday meals.

I passed on the mashed potatoes and fruit salad. I love fruit salad the way I make it, just cut up chunks of different, fresh fruits. But my sister uses canned and frozen fruit, then mixes in whipped cream and cream cheese. It is mushy and not at all fresh like a fruit should be, so no thanks.

My family is tired of the traditional foods of Thanksgiving, which we have been moaning about for years. Also, we're growing and have outgrown the table and space we have in a single area, so we're trying to think of something different to do next year.

I keep thinking about the gorgeous grazing table that Robin did for her daughter's wedding and wondering how to create a Thanksgiving one.
