Default 12x12 or 8x8

I've been doing 12x12, and planned on getting most of them that I already have made printed this weekend 12x12. I always felt like 8x8 would be too small for me to really like. However, I just got a sample print today - and womp womp womp... I adore the 8x8! I'll have to rethink how I planned on doing the new albums...hmm.

What size do you prefer?

I actually prefer the 8.5x8.5 that viovio.com offers. You wouldn't think that extra 1/2 inch makes a difference, but it really does. I've printed 12, 12x12 albums, 12 of the 8x8 and I'm at 11 of the 8.5x8.5, I've been doing that size since 2009, and that's the size I really love the most.

After 7 years of scrapping 8.5x11, I switched to square LOs and thought 10x10 would be the perfect size. I drove myself crazy trying to find 10x10 albums (for single pages, not bound books) before giving up and getting a few LOs printed in 8x8 and 12x12 to help me decide. I made the opposite choice--an 8x8 seemed way too small to me. Maybe it's because most of my pages have multiple photos and many have lots of journaling, but for me the bigger the better! Now that I've had 2 years of printing 12x12s, I don't think I'd even want to go down to 10x10 anymore.

I've never noticed the 8.5x8.5 option. Interesting =) This page has only photo, it's the tricyle one in my gallery. Seems perfect size for that. Pretty sure I wouldn't want our family albums that size though, since I try to include LOTS of pictures on most of those pages.

When I did my test prints, I printed 1 that had a single photo and one that had 4 or 5 photos. For the single photo I liked both sizes, but the other LO is what really sold me on the bigger pages. You mentioned that these pages are separate from your family albums. Is this a mini album, or do you have multiple ongoing albums?

I do 8.5x8.5 too. They're perfect. I print mine as photobooks.

I print photobooks at 21 x 21 cm, which is an equivalent of 8 x 8. I feel it's the perfect size, fits nicely into your hands when leafing through the book and it also fits on the shelf. 12 x 12 is probably more wow, but not that practical IMHO.

I do 8x8 prints. 12x12 seems massive to me, but I know plenty of people who love that size. Just another one of those things that's a matter of personal preference.

I do either 8x8 or 10x10 photobooks - depends on what the book is for (themed book or yearly book, etc.) and where I get it printed

We prefer 8x8 - the boys can hold them much better to browse through, and that is why I scrap!

8x8 for me as well, just easier to handle and store. My paper layouts are 12x12 and no one really looks through them.

What she said... plus, I don't have room on my book shelf for 12x12 - they hang over too far - and those binders (being my paper albums) are heavy!

I prefer 8x8...for the cost and because the one 12x12 album I have feels unwieldy. Now that I know it exists, I'd like to try the 8.5x8.5.

I've got hundreds of paper layouts at 12x12. Since I don't scrap chronologically and put my digi layouts right in with the paper layouts, I print at 12x12.

Plus, I just prefer the size to see the photos and stories clearly. And there's something about hauling out those big ol' scrapbooks to look at that is very special, IMO.

I do 8x8 books at Christmas for the grandmas, and they're always so tiny to me...

I like 12x12 because I think it's so much easier to read the stories.

I'm another 12x12 girl. I printed my first batch of layouts as 8x8's and they were just a little too small for me. I like to put lots of photos on my page, too. Plus, I want to make sure I can still see the pictures (and journaling) in 20 years

I scrap & print 8x8. I do think the size is a little small which is probably why I don't do a ton of multi-photo layouts. A 9x9 or 10x10 seems like it'd be a better size to me but I prefer albums to photobooks since I don't scrap in any order and those are tough to find. I've printed a few 12x12 pages and they seem HUGE to me.

pretty sure persnickety is having a sale this weekend of 12x12 and you can buy print credits (it is superbowl weekend this weekend right?)

I do 8x8 and am doing 8x8 for project life and they just started offering print credits for 8x8 as well - yahoo!

But I still scrap 12x12 and just resize when I get ready to print.

I scrap 12x12 and print at whatever size I can find for the best price when I go to print I have a 12x12 book and it seems huge but I really like the way the layouts look. I have a 7x7 book which is soooo tiny compared to the 12x12 but the layouts still look good, except the journaling on a couple is sort of tiny. Most of my books are 8x8 or 8.5x8.5 and I really prefer them from a holding in my hands standpoint.

Wow, I am surprised at the amount of 8x8 fans here. Not sure why, lol. I guess I assumed 12x12 was the majority. My albums are all over the place - that's what I am working on this year, getting organized. So far so good

I think I'll stick with 12x12. I love the big scrapbooks. And honestly, when my 2 oldest look at our regular photo albums, it's nice that they are so large because they can both see at the same time. I can't see them sharing an 8x8, with 12x12 it's like there is room for them to each have their own side instead of both holding it lol. I believe I will be doing 8x8 for my own personal album this year though. All the great layouts with so much journaling and personal reference in the gallery has inspired me to do more for - and about - ME. 8x8 would be great for that, no need for a bulky album of ME haha.

Oh - and we have those Ikea Expedit shelves, they hold 12x12 albums perfectly!

I have done both. I like that 8 x 8 is easier to hold and just sit out on the coffee table. I also LOVE the look and clarity of the 12 x 12 albums. Last year I decided that I would do all 12 x 12, but when I put my pages into an album, I couldn't find a shelf to fit the albums on nicely. In our current home, we have built-ins that they would fit on, but we won't be here forever. SO, I'm pretty much torn on what to do. I think I'll print at 8 x 8 for now, and one day when we're retired from the Army and build a home of our own, we'll get huge IKEA bookcases or build-ins and I'll re-print everything at 12 x 12.

Ahhh how amazing would that be to have a wall of ikea expedit shelves with big, fat, albums full of memories?

Haha... don't judge me

I scrap at 12x12 so that I have options but I prefer to print at 8x8. I have a few 12x12 photo books and I have duplicates of those same books in 8x8 and I prefer the 8x8 in almost every case. The size is just so much more convenient. I don't find that my journaling is too small to read or pictures too small to see or anything like that. I like the 12x12's but they are just so massive that no one bothers to get them out, ever. The 8x8's are out all the time. I have probably 40 8x8 books and my kids carry them to school with them, take them to friend's houses, sleep with them in their beds, etc. LOL They are, IMO, the perfect size. My books are all Shutterfly too. I haven't tried any other company yet because I've gotten every one of my Shutterfly albums free (most with free shipping as well) so I haven't had a need to buy any yet. I also have triplicates of each of the 40 some books. Two of each are put up. When the kids grow up they will get a copy of each and we'll have a copy of each left.

I have always printed 8x8. I have probably a 1000 printed pages that size! I went that way 1.) because of the price and 2.) it's easier for my kids to hand that size book!!!

However I will say that I am doing project Life this year and I am printing that in size 12x12 but i will continue to scrap "regular pages" and those will still be printed 8x8.

I scrap everything 12x12 for future options. So far I've printed 8x8 books and very few 12x12 pages. But after starting PL, and having lots of photos and journaling, I decided to go for 12x12 book. I'm looking forward to get my first 12x12 book in a week!!! Can't wait! Like Sherry, I plan on eventually printing extra copies for kids. So, I'm thinking that I can keep 12x12 as master copy and print 3 copies of 8x8 for each kids.

^^ This...I meant to add that earlier. I am printing Project Life in 12 x 12 and will continue to do that, but 8 x 8 for my regular pages.

And, yes, the beauty of Digi is that you can always reprint in a different size . I love that I have that option.

I scrap 12x12. I've had two books printed at 11x11 and loved them - perfect size. The place I was printing have closed now, so I'll have to choose between 10x10 and 12x12, and will probably go with the 10x10 because of the cost. I've printed regular photo books at 8x8 and find them too small, so it would definitely be too small for scrap pages for me.

If I'm using a shutterfly coupon, it's 8x8, since that is always what my coupon is for. I printed off some 12x12's through Persnickety to just put in albums before I ever got my first 8x8 book, and was shocked at how BIG my elements were, haha! It's been forever since I got enough scrapping done to warrant printing, but am working on another free shutterfly book, and am curious as to how multi-photo layouts and such will look! (most all my previous layouts were with just two or three photos!).

I guess in short, I print whatever is cost effective at the time, and have both 8x8s and 12x12s!

I've been printing 8.5x8.5, but really anything between the 8x8 and 12x12 range is fine for me. I usually purchase books based on what the best value is.

Yup, I love those. We have an older bookshelf in the family room/playroom that holds the 12x12s with only a little overhang. But within the next few weeks we're finally repainting that room and replacing the shelves with Expedit bookcases. They'll hold the kids' toys better than what we have there now, and they'll fit my albums better. Win-win! I already have an Expedit bookshelf as part of my desk, so I have my Project Life binders there. The binders are a lot bigger than my usual postbound 12x12s, and they don't fit well on the old shelves.
