Default Book help for Abby

Abby is 8 and in 2nd grade. She reads everything she can get her hands on and is reading on about a 4th or 5th grade level. She has read every single Nancy Drew already and I have the Percy Jackson series on hold at the library for her.. but I dont' know what else to give her. She loves mythology and light mysteries.. nothing very scary as she's kind of a weenie
She's already read all the Harry Potter's too.

I'm at a loss.. someone help me! Please!

My DD enjoyed the Children of the Lamp series - but I'm not sure if they were scary or not. They are little fairies and genies with some mystery mixed in.
The Borrowers by Mary Norton.
Artemis Fowl - again, not sure if it's scary or age appropriate but you could ask her teacher or a librarian.

Hmmm... sounds just like my son. He is 8, too, and loves to read. He just finished the first Percy Jackson book and really liked it. Has she read the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series? My son enjoys those, but I don't know how "boyish" they are. I will say he tears through them, though. Hopefully, you will get a lot of good suggestions here. If not, I have found it helpful to go to Barnes & Noble and ask for advice there while perusing the kids' section. The last two series suggested to me were the Magnificent 12 and 39 Clues. Can't speak to much they would appeal to a girl, though... Good luck!

Boxcar Children

There is a cool feature on the scholastic teacher website called Book Wizard- you put in a book that your kiddo likes and they pull up a list of similar books. Might put in some of her faves and see if anything interesting comes up

39 Clues, Percy Jackson, the Narnia series?,

Our kids read the Young Hoosier Books each year and vote for a favorite... maybe you could try some from the intermediate list? http://www.ilfonline.org/clientuploa...BANominees.pdf

Logan's been reading the How To Train Your Dragon series, if you've seen the movie, the books are a bit different. Logan loves them and since you mentioned mythology, somehow that made me think of dragons.

I was going to suggest the Boxcar Children books, as well. I've heard good things about them. The Geronimo Stilton books about the mouse and all of his adventures look really fun. Also, the paperback books by Roald Dahl (illustrated by the wonderful Quentin Blake) are awesome and get glowing reviews on Amazon.

What about the American Girl series?? It may be too young for her and it may not be something she's as interested in either...my avid reader loves them!

I'm thinking I'm going to have the same problem with one of my girls...she loves to read! I'm taking notes from the books suggested here.

You know that I *have* to suggest the Anne of Green Gables books as well as second the Narnia and Roald Dahl suggestions. Classic books that stand the test of time.

My little sister is nine and is currently totally obsessed with the Harry Potter books. Recently, she's started reading Narnia and really enjoys them, too.

If she likes mysteries check out the Trixie Belden series - lots of books in that series too. Cheyanne has read every last book and likes to even reead some of them at 11.

I<3 Trixie Beldens! I think I have 30 of them from when I was little. My DD has read the first 4 or 5 and liked them, too. She is a big fan of the Animal Ark Series, if your DD likes animals. The also have some spooky animal arks in a spin-off series. My DS loved the Series of Unfortunate Events books.

I was just coming back because I couldn't believe I had forgotten to suggest Bevelry Cleary and Judy Blume!! I read Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing to my boys (5 and 8) and they loved it

I'm also glad Nikki thought to suggest Newberry Books. I ready many on the list when I was teaching fourth grade, and I was so surprised how much I enjoyed them as an adult!

Along the same lines as Trixie Belden would be The Bobbsey Twins. There are two sets of those--the first set has over 70 books, the second has 30 and are a little more recent (late 80s-early 90s).

Girly stuff that not too pink-princessy (if that makes sense): Little House on the Prairie, Little Women, The Penderwicks (my favorite storybook family!).
The Westing Game is a good one, but maybe a for older kids? Although if she's read Harry Potter she could probably read anything I'd be recommending.
Winnie the Pooh is actually not that easy to read, but very cute - it might give her a challenge.
Snow Treasure, by Marie McSwigan.
I second the Narnia series.
E. L. Konigsburg writes some really good stuff. Definitely unconventional, but I really love it.
I love Peter Pan, as well as the authorized sequel which is Peter Pan in Scarlet. None of that Disney junk.
When You Reach Me, by Rebecca Stead. Another one that may be a bit advanced but it sooo good.
What about Lloyd Alexander? He has lots of good adventures that aren't violent or scary - comfortable sort of adventures.
Avi also has lots of good books - Midnight Magic is a cool mystery.
Kate DiCamillo is awesome.
If she's into "boy" books, and she's read Harry Potter, then I would recommend the Ranger's Apprentice series by John Flanagan. They are violent, but I wouldn't say any more violent than HP.
A lot of my recommendations I would probably say are 4th grade reading level as well as maturity, if that makes sense, but if she's read Harry Potter I'd say that they're around that level or easier/for a younger audience.

My daughter has read most of these mentioned. Her favorites have been the Harry Potter series, Dear America books and the American Girl books. She also likes the Animal Ark series (well, anything to do with animals, especially horses). She will pretty much read anything. We have a hard time keeping her in books. She's the top reader at her school the second year running. I'd like to find a good series that kept her busy for a while. She read all 7 Harry Potter books in a matter of 2 weeks (and that's only reading about an hour a day at bedtime and a few minutes here and there at school).

I could use some suggestions for my son. He is 6 and in kindergarten. He easily reads at a 3rd grade level but has the interest and attention span of a kindergartener. Finding books to challenge him while still holding his interest is hard. He can read way more than he can comprehend so its a struggle to find good reading material for him that isn't too easy.

Immediately Anne of Green Gables came to mind. I used to love those books. Another series by LM Montgomery that I loved was about a girl named Emily- Emily of New Moon, Emily Climbs, and Emily's Quest. Another series that I liked was the Mandy series by Lois Gladys Leppard.
