Default Kindle @ the library

is a go I'm really excited as I live in a funky area where we can't use our local library. I *heart* my Kindle already but this will be a nice bonus.

I got my Kindle for my birthday and it's one of my best presents evah!! I waffled between the Nook/Kindle for the same reason but I have to say that I've had zero regrets going with the Kindle.

Heather my Mom reads on her iPad all the time. I only use my Kindle to read so I like the smaller size and I prefer the eink.

yeah, I still think I might ask for the Kindle because Mark has to have the iPad for work so I'd only have access to it in the evenings or weekends.

I think it's so great...only we don't have a public library in our county...well we do but it's like teeny tiny and they don't even have a website

My library was surprised to hear it when I called them this morning. I'm not feeling good about them getting it anytime soon. They said check back in a month.

I wonder what the library has to do to get the kindle books available?

I have a feeling it's all up to Overdrive, they will have to make there system have the ability to convert the ebooks into a format the Kindle can use...either .Mobi or PDF.

Having said that Overdrive has probably already done that, it might just take libraries time to learn it so they can help with consumer problems.

I just went to the digital library here in Phoenix (Chandler library to be exact) and they have the Kindle option already up! I'm a NookColor user but thought I'd pass that along for anyone who lives here.

I have a friend who is going to be very happy!

Cool. I have a Nook, but I also have the Kindle app on my phone and ipad so I'm happy either way.

I don't have one and don't plan to get one because I'm addicted to audiobooks I can listen to as I scrap and do household chores. But I checked, and our library system has them up through the Overdrive site.

Thanks for mentioning this. I checked our library's Overdrive link & there are kindle books there!!

Probably I ought to tell the lady at the reference desk that.

Just talked to our library and they said Overdrive is hoping to update all public and school library web sites within a week. She thought that was optimistic, but it should be soon!

Our library was supposed to have the Kindle e-books available soon and I just checked and they do! Now I just need to get a Kindle (or a Kobo) for my birthday in February. Christmas is going to be an iPod Touch since it's more money.

Yes, pretty much the only avenue we (libraries...I'm in my librarian mode right now LOL) have is Overdrive. Did you know it's tens of thousands of dollars for libraries to offer Overdrive? So if your library doesn't have it, it's probably due to the massive federal and state funds that we've had cut the last 2+ years. In my library system, we're really working our butts off to get Overdrive in 2012...we hope to make it happen. Between grants and our library foundation and some magic budgeting, we want to get this for our patrons, because we DO KNOW that it's what our patrons want. But being able to just say "Oh, you guys want this? OK!" is an impossibility.

And on a side note, with non-profits, like libraries, the crunch the economy is feeling has a very weird timeline. We don't start feeling the crunch until about 2 years later, and it takes us an extra 2+ years to recovery, because of budget processes.

Our library formed a consortium with 10 other rural counties to get Overdrive a year or so ago. They could never afford it alone even in boom times. We have 1100 Kindle titles!

I would definitely still get the Kindle! Not only to have more access to it, but because reading on the kindle is awesome. I much prefer the size and weight of it to the ipad, esp. if I want to read in bed or carry it in my purse while I'm out and about.

State librarires usually don't have that kind of thing, let alone many books, to be honest. They have state documents, federal documents and reference books, mostly. And some states don't really even have that. State libraries actually have LESS money than the average county or city library (or consortium) because they don't get local tax money, they have to rely solely on state and federal funding, which has been cut to the max.

If your local library doesn't have it, check the regional system. My local library does not have overdrive, but we're part of the larger regional system and therefore can use the nearest big cities system

Woo-hoo! Our county library system went live with Kindle lending today, and so did the library system in a large city near us. (My library card is registered with both, so I can use both systems!) I've already got a virtual stack of Kindle library books to read ...

They've had OverDrive for quite a while but not the Kindle stuff. From what I've read, you would just choose the book you want, and when you checkout, it will give you the option to download the Kindle compatible format. Then, I think amazon is the one that actually sends the book to your Kindle. *I think* Hopefully, they'll have it up and running soon.

When I checked out several books today, it sent me to Amazon's web site to have them sent via WhisperSync to my Kindle. Easy as pie!

Our local library started loaning out books to Kindle's today! My husband saw it when he went to pick up a book for me. So he asked if I wanted to get one (he knows I want one). lol Silly man! Of course. We're going to buy it later today. It'll be nice to not have to worry about three little ones finding where I stash my library books and tearing them apart.

Really? Didn't the Kindle 3 just come out not that long ago? Hmm now do I wait and get it for Christmas or go ahead and get it now & have it for Rachel's surgery/recovery time??? Hmmmm not fair. I finally decide that I can get one (and afford to) and they tempt us with a rumor about new ones in just a few short months.. Decisions. Decisions.

Ok you all I have figured out a few things with library lending!!!

1. My library is kind of stingy and we can only check out 2 books at a time and you can only keep them for 7 days, which isn't bad if you are a slow reader but I'm pretty fast and when I was getting the audiobooks or reading on my computer, I would finish them in a like 3 days and be left waiting till they expired to be able to get new books...well since the Kindle books are through Amazon now...you can actually "return the book" and then check out more...I don't have to wait the whole 7 days. You just go under your account and then manage your kindle and under action there is one to "return book" YEAH!!! I'm hoping this will help with books that have waiting lists!!

2. There seems to be a bit of a "glitch" with downloading the books from Amazon, my sister was at my house this weekend for a party and I was showing her how to log on and check out a kindle book and download it....we went through her library's (in Ohio) website and checked out with her library card and when I clicked the link through to Amazon I was still signed into my account and it let me download it to my Kindle. Now the thing is, the book can only be on one device so she wouldn't of been able to then sign in under her name and download the book too....BUT....her library allows her to check out 10 books and to keep them for 14 days so technically.....I (or anyone for that matter) could check out a book and download it to their device. Oh I deleted it from my Kindle cause she really did want to read it...I just wanted to see if it really would download!!

Also my library in just a few short days has added almost 100 more kindle books...I'm so so excited!!!! I hope everyone else is having as good as experience as I am!!!
