Have you heard of PFAPA?

Have you heard of PFAPA, had a child with it or know someone who has? They think my 5 year old may have it. He gets a REALLY high fever about every 5 weeks...no other symptoms just a really high fever that lasts about 3 days. I took him to the doctor today and spent a few hours there...testing for this and that....

The doctor's office has to have SIX reoccuring episodes on file before they can officially diagnose him and we can start talking about treatment options.

Today his fever was 105...the highest yet. It came down to 101 but shot right back up to 105 this evening. The fever comes so quickly and goes away just as fast. It's not contagious which explains why no one else in the house ever gets sick when Jason has been "sick".

I just want my baby to feel better and I hate that I can't make this go away. IF this is what he has...he could have episodes until he hits puberty......sigh.....

My nieces daughter has recurring fevers. She is just over a year old. They do not have any diagnosis as far as I know for the fevers and they come every couple of weeks it seems. Is that something only boys can have or is it something boys and girls can have?

I'm not really sure Jessica but I assume that both girls and boys can get it.

Weird, and scary. I haven't heard of that, but hope that you can get things figured out for him. That is a high fever -- and high fevers scare me since my little guy has a history of seizures.

I had never heard of that. I just did some reading about it. I was relieved to see that it said there is no danger to the long-term health of the child. It sounds like a big pain to deal with and it is never easy seeing your kids sick but if this is what the culprit is at least it's positive looking towards the future. I hope you get some answers!

I've never heard of it.

When my dh was little, he had fevers and siezures often. His fever would just randomly spike and he'd start having siezuers... His mom took him to a ton of different hospitals, and they saw specialists, and no one ever agreed on a single diagnosis... I forget the last thing they ever told him it was, but when he tells other drs, they say no way you had that as a kid He was on a bunch of meds, which they even told him would unfortunately make him sterile... Well, that proved to be wrong But my girls get high fevers for no apparent reason, I've taken them to their Dr., and I always get the same thing - they're fine, give them tylenol. Sometimes they last quite a few days, but nothing else seems wrong with them. It scares me because of dh's history, but so far, it seems to be nothing major. I just don't like how often they get fevers... It seems like more often than normal kids, kwim?

I'm sure it's not fun at all, and I hope you do get some answers!!

When my oldest was younger, she use to frequently get high fevers every few weeks. Like insanely high! Scared the heck outta me. No one could ever tell us why. There wasn't any other symptoms. She has pretty much grown out of it it seems. Last really high fever was 2 years ago and it was the highest. Our thermometer said like 107-108 then it just said high. She was barely awake and dh immediately put her in the bath and gave her meds and I rushed to the hospital and was told I was making it up becuase she couldn't be that high. Well she was still almost 105 after the meds and bath. But again, still never got any answers.

But back to you (sorry to derail) I hope you get it figured out. I don't think I've ever heard of that. I just wonder now if her health care didn't span 3 states in that time frame that we might have gotten some kind of answer.
