I've sold furniture, a boat, jetskis and toys on craigslist.
The only thing I'm worried about ever is weirdos coming to the house. For small toys and other items I meet the person in a public place to make the sale. For large items I usually make sure someone else is at my house when they come to look at it (hubby, a friend, etc.) just to be safe. I also have the items in the garage so the person doesn't even come in my house (you know to check it out and see what they want to come back and steal...I have trust issues LOL). Most people text or send an email (you can make your real email hidden) to ask about the items and meeting up for a sale.

What I hate most is people who never show up...I don't want to give you my address if you aren't coming for pete's sake. I always make sure my hubby will be home and make sure you count the cash before they leave - been burned by that.

Another option - our local area has a swap page on Facebook. It seems to be a lot more friendly and everyone lives in the same area. Depending on what you are looking at getting rid of this might be another way to advertise.
I second the putting it in your garage and having someone else home when people come to look. I sold some rubber stamps awhile a go and I met the person in the parking lot at CVS versus either one of us going to the other's house.

I've had better luck with local area FB swap groups.

Hubby has sold a number of things on CL... and he said don't let your ad "sit"... go in daily, delete the first ad and repost so that it's back on the "front" page. And if you live in a very busy area, you might have to do it every 4 to 5 hours. Oh -and on reposting, you need to tweak/rewrite your post or you could get flagged - we had that last year posting for a rummage sale... but changed a few words and it went through.

I used CL to sell some large items before we moved to Florida. I had some people who were great, showed up on time and with the correct amount of cash. I also had some horrible drama queens who called every 30 mins to tell me they were late, or wanted to pay less once they got there, etc.
Overall, the experience was OK. We were getting rid of a lot of large household items including almost all of our furniture, so the money made helped diminish the hassles. I think it's more trouble than it's worth for small items under $100. Last edited by catgoddess; 07-29-2013 at 09:46 PM. |

My husband has. We usually meet the person at the gas station because it makes both of us feel a little more at ease for the most part. Just one suggestion list the item for slightly more then you are willing to accept otherwise all youll get is hagglers who want it for less then you expect. It makes them feel like they are getting a deal and you still get what you want. Ive yet to see someone not want to haggle on the price honestly.
