Default Advent Calendar

I really really wanna make one! I was wondering if magnetic printer paper would stick to the baking sheet instead of using regular magnets? i know those sheets are not extremely magnetic; i have some left from a refridgerator magnet chart i made. but i was wondering if the little cut squares would stick to a metal sheet. what do you think? i should just go try it but i thought i'd ask here first, lol.

but then, if i'm adding embellishements to the squares, that would probably be too heavy and they'd fall of from that. i think i just answered my own question, lol. oh well, any advice anyone who has made one has is welcome! i don't wanna start and the screw it up.

If you're using the magnet sheets, make sure you are using a NEW blade for your trimmer, and you'll need to replace it afterwards. Those sheets dull up those blades REALLY quickly, I learned, lol.

I bought a roll of the magnetic tape stuff to make mine and some of my squares have metal embellies on them and it worked great.

i've already printed out my magnetic squares. i'm also going to print out some embellies on cardstock to cut out and then get some other christmasy stickers and embellies to put on them too.

i'm mainly using Zoe and Melissa's Deck the Halls kit and a few thing from Kay's Ice Capade kit too.

I'm making the most amazing (IMO) advent calendar with my new xmas kit! hehe This is just a tease, cause I still have lots of work to do on it before I can take any pics. Make sure you girls post yours - I wanna see them! I love advent calendars!

I used little round magnets on the backs of mine and the squares were cut from chipboard before we decorated them.

I so want to go to my LSS this week, they are making one of these in a class on Wednesday night - my birthday! But I have NO supplies (trimmer, glue, etc) to bring to the class (they supply the papers, embellies, cookie sheet, etc).

i have a lot done on mine, but i need a few things from Hobby Lobby so it'll have to wait. a couple of my magnetic squares got messed up cause of the kids so i'll have to re-print a couple. Mines very eclectic so far with random stuff in my stash, lol. i've used buttons, a lot of glitter, stickers, little flowers. but i need more christmasy stuff yet on it. i'm hoping when i'm done, it'll all come together. right now i'm not very fond of it lol.

I used a baking tray. I'm not sure if you call them something different in America. The sides aren't very deep, perhaps just less than 1 cm, it came from the £1 shop. The squares were cut from chipboard, painted and then we added the papers (my new stampin up scalloped square punch was the perfect size) and then the embellishments. I used my cropodile to punch holes at one end to thread the ribbon through. We used small round magnets and glued them on, they were bought off ebay but I have some on my desk for my next one that I bought from Borders here in the UK.

Here's one that I just finished over the weekend

There are more pictures on my blog here and here you can see "in progress" photos inc what my magnets and tray looked like before I started.

Edited: forgot to say... I celebrate Christmas on the 24th of Dec. So instead I made the 24th square double sized.

This is gorgeous also!!!! I'm running as fast as my fingers can click that button to head over to your blog....LOL

Okay, so I'm in love with the idea of doing an Advent Calendar....Prior to joining this fabulous Community I'd never done any kind of scrapbooking....Therefore, I do not own any paper scrapbooking supplies....What I want to know is, if I decide to try to make my own Advent Calendar, what kind of "tool" do I need to purchase to create the scalloped edge that you have on your squares? I think we need someone to give a course in making Advent Calendars....LOL Then those of us who have no clue can learn together as a group....
Thanks for any help....

I decided to go ahead and cover the tree that I got last year at Starbuck's. It is very similar to the Karen Foster boxes. I need to go get some treats to fill the boxes before the end of the month.

okay. you guys are putting mine to shame!!! lol

i went to Hobby Lobby today. i bought some blank chipboard. i'm going to redo my squares using chipboard instead of the magnetic printer paper ones i have now. i think they just look cheap, lol. my tray is fine, except for some more embellishing. and i got some little round magnets, a few glittery 3d stickers, some regular stickers, and some cardstock so i can print out a few of the kits embellies to cut out and put on there. the only thing i need is the chipboard letter for the title but they weren't on sale so i'll pick them up later. When i'm done i'll share!

oh, i also got a white paint pen for the dates.

Corey, I'm sure your Advent Calendar tray will be fabulous! I can't wait to see pictures of yours....

I really want to try to make one, but really don't know where to start....I have several questions....For example, do you "treat" the baking tray before starting? If I want my Chipboard pieces to have scalloped edges, what do you use to cut through Chipboard? Thanks so much for any help....

Thanks It's a combination of two kits really but they are not SSD so I'm not really sure I should post it here. I'll whisper instead *shhhh* LOL! It's "Christmas Dreams" and "Jolly Lil Friends" by Mindy Terasawa at DD.

No I did not treat it in any way. I used double sided tape for the papers (to attach them to the tray). As for the squares, I used a scalloped square punch. Hope that helps

You're very welcome If you're off out to buy a punch, take a tape measure with you and turn the punch over to measure the "cut square" as such...to make sure you get one that will be a good size for your tray/grid

I made this one that I shared instructions for last December on the Hawt Mama Team Blog

It is made using a mini muffin pan so you can put goodies in the spot where the muffins would be.

It was so easy and fun to make. I am thinking of making another one this year for myself as this one was a gift.

Pam, I love the idea of the mini-muffin tray with goodies underneath!
This is one of those projects that I really want to do, but I don't have kids, so I feel like it's pointless.

Make it for yourself - that's what I did. Nothing that says that grown-ups can't have advent calendars

Ok I found an image of it. You put numbers on the tags and then change the numbers for each day.

Here's an example of a finished one. (On the left, not the right)

that is cute, Col!!

i am almost done with mine. i still need chipboard letters and holes drilled in it. DH doesn't have a drill bit as of now. I painted my sheet with dark red paint and then dry brushed gold over it. looks sort of old and grungy. i like it. printed out papers from Deck the Halls, also made the squares using that kit. i used some stickers i bought on it too. my numbers are not consistant, lol. some are bigger some are smaller. but the double digits wouldnt fit if i didnt shrink them. oh well. i used some glitter paint on them and the edges of the sheet. and some clear christmas tree stickers along the bottom. cutting the chipboard wasn't as difficult as i thought it would be. didnt turn out too bad. i didnt have any photo paper, so it just regular printer paper. i would like for it to have been glossy, but i just used what i had. i then painted over the blue paper with blue and gold paint, just for kicks, lol.

k....don't laugh....lol

Chloe spilled a glass of water on the table next to me and splattered the top left corner. i guess it could have been worse, lol.

some close ups. oooooh sparkly!

i guess its not too bad. i'm not the greatest at hybrid stuff. i'm much better at scrapping, lol.

Col I made one sort of like that tree one last year from scratch and gave it to my SIL & her kits (it is probably ruined, oh well) Mine was a square board I got at Michael's & added the really small cup hooks I found at Home Depot.
