Default I'm so sad

Today we found out that my grandfather has Alzheimer's. He's been declining so quickly over the past few months but he's already in stage 6! This morning they had to take him by ambulance because he had fallen and was being very nasty hollering at everyone. He will be 85 on Monday and he said he wants a chocolate cake! LOL My grandmother has had to care for him but she is so overwhelmed and tired that my mother and I may have to stay with them some (we are only 20 minutes away which is good). I never thought I'd experience anything like this; I know it must be scary for him. He has always been the father figure in my life for the last 40 years and I'm so sad to see him failing. There really isn't anything that can be done except to make him comfortable now and try to deal with his episodes.

Please, if you will, keep us in your thoughts and prayers as we go through this trying time. Thanks for reading!

So sorry! That's a tough one to watch/handle. We went through it 8 years ago with my DH's grandmother. His grandpa had a hard time taking care of her and we had to help out a lot since DH's parents lived in a different state. Wish I had some good advice to offer

Thank you all for the kind words; they mean alot. They really do! Right now we are Grandpa-proofing the house with safety things. Didn't expect I'd need to be buying baby safety items again! He was messing with the stove and oven so hopefully knob covers and locks will keep him out! He has more bad moments than good at this point and is really weak today. My family is coming down to Florida over the next week to spend some time with him and see him one last time so that will be good (extra help).

I think the hardest thing was having to sit down and talk to Hannah about it. She cried, I cried....it was a mess! Anyway, I think she sort of understands that her Poppy is dying but all she said was "What about Great-Grandmom?", "She will be all alone." Ahhh, the caring mind of a 9 year old I guess.

Honey, at least you're not dealing with this alone. I don't believe in "better" and "worse" situations, any bad situation is bad, fullstop. But the most hard part for me when dealing with Mum's Alzheimer's is that I'm totally alone in it, there are no family members I could truly rely upon. They just all take it for granted that I deal with it, and while I'm the closest relative it's also true that I'm the one who lives the farthest away. That said, I'm so thinking of you. *hugs*

I'm so sorry! I watched my always in control father at only 60 years old rapidly decline from alz. It can be completely frustrating and incredibly draining for both the patient and the caregivers. If you need to talk, please IM me. ((( hugs )))

I'm so sorry! It's so hard...I'm going through it with my mom right now. I've never heard of "stages" with it, or at least her doctor hasn't shared that with my dad. She's bad though. Recently had a bladder infection which landed her in the hospital, and my dad having to step up his care for her. We found a great adult day care program that he's taking her to twice a week, but my brother and I are getting the paperwork ready for her to go into a facility soon. My dad won't be able to care for her much longer. She can barely walk (is forgetting how to put one foot in front of the other), and he's 84 and is unstable on his feet himself. I'm 9 hours away and my brother is on the other side of the U.S. We are both trying to get up there every few months. Thankfully, the anti depressants keep her from getting angry. We had some of that and it got pretty hard for my dad then.

It's such a horrible disease. Hugs!!!

It makes me so sad to read how many people are suffering from this. It's such an ugly disease. I've never known before, but now I'm talking to people there hardly seems a family that hasn't known somebody suffer from it. :-(
