Default Need advice: Matron of Honor speech

My little sister is getting married this weekend. I have to give a Matron of Honor speech at the reception. I have the choice of going before or after the Best Man. I'm guessing his speech will be funny and probably inappropriate. So tell me...from weddings you've been to or been in, what do you like to hear (or not hear) in a toast at a wedding?

Oh, and I've been combing Pinterest for ideas and I'm definitely not singing or rapping my speech!

Hmm. Here are a few ideas:

- Introduce yourself so that everyone will know who is talking (seen so many where nobody says who they are or how they know the bride!)
- Thank you to everyone for attending and to everyone who planned the wedding
- A sweet story about you and your sister and how much she means to you
- A bit about how you met the groom and how he's become a part of the family
- Mention any important people who are no longer with the family to celebrate
- Marriage advice or jokes about it
- Best wishes for the future and a toast

When I had to give one at my sister's wedding, I looked up advice on the format online because I had no clue what to say. After reading a few suggestions, I did an abbreviated version of what Heddy posted. I think it was:

introduce myself
story about my sister
tied the story into a piece of advice
welcomed the groom to the family
toast

I don't know what type of speech you're planning, but I can't pull off funny. I'd choose to go before the Best Man so I don't have to compete with that.

I can't say what the wedding guests thought about it, but my sister later told my parents that mine had been her favorite speech because it was so personal to her. Good luck and have fun!

Great advice ladies! I really don't think I can pull off funny either - other than maybe one line. Now to figure out exactly what I want to put in to each of those categories. Oh, and thanks for saying to mention people who aren't at the wedding. I do want to mention how much I think my grandmother would have loved my sister's fiancé.

My matron of honor (close friend) did her speech in Seuss rhyme... haha... The maid of honor was like 15 and refused to talk... so no help there...
