School was cancelled today (Friday) here in Manila, but so far just light rains. I think it is supposed to get bad later tonight. Our friends down south have boarded up their house and are preparing for the worst. Our electricity went out already this am, so we're getting everything charged now while it's on and stocking up on drinking water and food.
It's especially scary for those who were just devastated by the earthquake last month down south.

Storm signal #4 here in Iloilo. School was out yesterday and today, malls and banks are closed as well. Really cloudy but no rain or winds, it's supposed to hit in the afternoon or evening.

So sorry to only check in now. I hadn't even realized all the news coverage about the typhoon outside the country.
Classes were all suspended here, though private and gov't offices were open. My sister and Dad are in southern Manila, where the storm is expected to hit hardest when it gets to Manila. There's been crazy wind and rain but it's died down a little. Over where Mark and I are, we are fine. It's actually eerily quiet. It was crazy wind and a little rain about four hours ago. Far south though, in Batangas and Cebu, it's already Storm Signal No. 4, which means it's pretty bad. A colleague of mine had a training program to run in Batangas and he called it off at noon today so people could travel back to Manila if need be. This morning I had an ocular inspection near the sea and while the wind was strong, not that much rain. We're just monitoring the news and keeping tabs on everyone. Thanks so much for all the kind thoughts, everyone! |

So...um...a bit of a tangent, but "ocular inspection?" Is that just an eye exam? 'Cause it sounds incredibly sexy the way you said it. /hubba

It's over now. Started getting strong winds and some rain around 2pm and went on and off until around 5-6pm. power restored around 7. everything's quiet now. i don't know yet the extent of the damage here in Iloilo but hubby is a volunteer firefighter and he was out the entire time helping clear downed trees.
Thankfully i think the flooding is minimal here because the rain was on and off and not constantly raining for hours. |

My friend just posted some pictures of the devastation on Facebook. It's terrible! My prayers are with anyone affected by this storm! Her family (in Tacloban) made it out safely, but their house is ruined and roofless. She said most people in the area will be living in tents through the New Year. My other friend's son has been accounted for, but she won't hear from him until Monday at the earliest.

That just basically means I visited the venue for a huge convention I'm helping to organize in January. Had to check out sexy details like how large the space is, where emergency exits and restrooms and other facilities are, blahblahblah. LOL I will have no life until it's done. I've only started sifting through the damage Typhoon Yolanda (local name) has done. It made landfall four times across six different provinces before leaving the country moving towards Vietnam. The hardest hit have lost all communication lines and their local government units are severely lacking in supplies and manpower. Local news crews who've made their way there have already reported that there are barely any relief goods to be had, and that they themselves have gone through their personal packed food and drink. Major supermarkets, malls, and drugstores have been looted. A summary of what's happened so far is here: http://www.manilaspeak.com/ms/a-typh...-not-prepared/ This broke my heart. As the communication lines were down (no mobile phones or internet), people resorted to sending messages through the crews who had satellite access and spare batteries. http://www.gmanetwork.com/news/story...-to-loved-ones I've been reading about SO many countries who've reached out to help us, whether with money or sending experts for relief operations and I cannot say enough thanks for it. Typhoons are an unfortunate fact in my country, and for sure, we'll survive this and carry on--it just may take a little longer this time. |
