Default Wish us luck @ the ENT!

So Parker is in 2 hours of speech therapy a week & it's going fairly well; he's picked up quite a few words. But they wanted his hearing checked of course. I went a few months ago, assuming it would be fine. It wasn't. A long wait for a referral & a trip to the ENT last week revealed he had fluid & mucous in both ears, and one eardrum looked retracted and like it had previously burst.

The boy NEVER has ear infections. As a matter of fact, this probably went unnoticed b/c he only visited the doctor like 2x in the last year, both for well checks. He had strep throat once, and other than that, he's been healthy.

Just apparently a lot of fluid muffling everything. Also, his tonsils were enlarged and at a "4".

We've just finished 1 round of antibiotics and are headed to the ENT to see if there is any change. If not, they are planning on doing a different antibiotic before planning surgery. I'd like to avoid surgery if possible, even if it is just tubes and tonsils.

could be. both of my kids have mild excema, which is allergy related, so it could be that. they don't have sneezies, runny noses or anything though. ??

I've had a long history with ear infections with Joey and he had the same problem with his eardrum as you describe. We ended up having eartubes placed 3 times.
Strange though that he didn't have any ear infections ot have caused this.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!

Good luck...Ive taken my kids to the dr's a few times and been told they had ear infections and had no clue whatsoever. I get one and it is probably one of the most painful things ever. Of course I was sick for like two-three weeks straight with a head cold and the dr told me blowing my nose constantly forced fluids back into my ears and the fluid built up until the eardrum burst. The actual bursting did not hurt I dont think because I felt it pop and then alot of fluid came out and that relieved the pain for the most part. Afterwards it took several weeks to get to where I could hear with that ear.

Hey Lena good luck!

We go to the ENT end of next month (cause there is only 1 in town that takes Tricare and I booked the appointment the beginning of last month) with probable surgery for Kyle's ears too. Since we've moved to Texas he has had ear infections every time he gets a cold. Course the only way I know is he runs a fever of 103 or so, sometimes he doesn't and acts normal but has them too and it is just by chance we are getting them looked at. So yeah...I'm there too!

Oh and we went Monday for allergy testing (pollens) and he did really good. Just kinda looked at the nurses and said "ow!" and then went back to watching his video. After five minutes he had several reaction spots and the biggest (the size of a dime) was for pecan trees. GREAT! They are everywhere here!!! He reacted to a bunch of other stuff too but we'll go back Monday to get a few more done (dog, cat, molds etc) and talk with the Doc again. He doesn't sneeze a lot but he does rub his nose and last month he had the puffiest itchiest eyes. Which we NEVER had in OH! See...we are allergic to TX!

Anyway...my long drawn out point was...allergies could be affecting him and he's too little to really tell you, and he may be so used to it that he doesn't complain.
