advise needed

Heyya
I'm in the process of updating my camera and would love some advise or hints and tricks about what to look out for. All around me i see photos with a blurred background and sharp focus points, or pictures with a sharp focus on things falling to the ground (eg a piece of food been thrown into the air). so it'll need a fast shutter speed i guess....i just want to take better photos.

does anyone have any hints or wants to share what kind of camera they are using for their fantastic photos?
