Default layer mode

Ok, I was reading Sheri's tutorial on the blog, and I came to this step:
Change the layer mode of the high pass layer to overlay

How do you do that? I don't see where I can do that. Help please!!

It's a blending mode. The blending modes are located right next to the Opacity (on the left side of Opacity to be precise) in the Layers palette. By default, you have Normal, and you can change it to Overlay and many others.

I must be missing something, because I followed the steps to a T and it's all discolored and dark. I think I'll stick with my normal method.

I haven't read the instructions yet, but I use the High Pass for sharpening. Normally I duplicate my photo, do the High Pass and set it for Overlay afterwards - sometimes lowering Opacity to 50% or so if it's too much. I don't do it with LOs, just with photos really.

Yes when you run the High Pass filter it will be greyish, but when you take that layer and adjust the blending mode to overlay - it makes everything pop.

I must be doing it wrong, because it doesn't do that, it stays gray. Could someone tell me the exact step so I can try it.

did you duplicate your image first? On the duplicate you run the High Pass filter which turns it grey. The instructions tell you how much to set it for...then you change the grey layer's blending mode to overlay. Does that make sense?

Yep, it makes perfect sense, but it isn't working for me. LOL

I'm duplicating the image, and then running the high pass filter, then I changed the layer mode to overlay, but it remains dark.

This is exactly what I am doing:

- taking my flattened image and resizing it to 600x600 (bicubic sharper)
- duplicating the image
- running the high pass filter on the duplicated image
- I can't change the layer mode unless I double click on it, and then I go down to overlay and save it - and it's still dark gray
- I quit because it looks dark gray ROFL

Now, if I drag the duplicated image over the original one - it pops, but that isn't mentioned on the blog. LOL

Yes, the overlay has to be on top, just as any overlay usually is.

Oh ok. I thought it would change on the duplicated image. Thanks so much Kiki!! I was beginning to feel pretty stupid.

It finally dawned on me what the problem must be, but Kiki was quicker. Glad it's worked out!

Next time try duplicating the layer instead of the image...then you don't have to move it over.

The instructions said to duplicate the image and that's what I did. But, I tried it again, and this time I duplicated the layer and I didn't have to drag it on top. Thanks for the idea.
