if you have more than one Kindle {I am thinking of getting my DD one fore her birthday}, can you link it to the same Amazon account or does she have to have her own account? Thanks

you can link them
you can register/activate or whatever it's called and when you buy books on amazon it'll say send to and have options to choose different kindles, ipads, and iphones

I load my kindle books into a program called Calibre and just load to different devices from there usualy. I really only load to our ipad and my kindle.

My son has a Kindle that is linked to my account. Along with that my phone, DH's phone and my Kindle for PC are attached to my account.

Sometimes, if I run into YA books, I would send it to just my son/daughter.. or I would send it to myself first and then, go in 'Manage my kindle' and send it to him, so that we both have it. Or.. I would send it to my Kindle and my phone, so that I can read on both.

Yes. That's all you'll need to do. Just be careful that she doesn't start buying the books from her kindle! But they have 7-day return policy, so it's not that bad.

No problem. I have my son's and mine on our account. I get an email whenever he "buys" a book, but he's never bought anything that actually cost money. He just gets free books (yes, my 17 year old loves reading Great Expectations and other classic literature). If he wants a book that needs purchased, he asks me to do it. Not sure if he doesn't realize we're set up for one click or whether he's really just a good boy. We just joined Prime so we get a free book each month. I told him to go crazy with it.

I just wanted to add I looked this up and you can have as many Kindles/devices as you want on your account but some books from Amazon have a limit as to how many devices you can have it on at the same time (it's usually 6)!!!

If you plan to share books it probably makes sense to share the account, but the one thing to keep in mind is that books purchased under 1 account can't be moved later. I can't remember exactly how old your oldest is, and I don't know what your expectations are for when she'll be buying books with her own credit card instead of yours. But if she buys books now and then in a couple of years sets up her own Amazon account with her own cc, she won't be able to transfer over any books she buys under your account. There's also no way to separate purchases--let's say she has a gift card on the account, and you want to buy a book for yourself. There's no way for you to do it without the funds coming off her gift card. (Once the gift card is on the account, you can't use a credit card for Kindle purchases until you've used up the gift card.)

My folks and I set up an account specifically for our Kindles. Their tastes in books are different that mine but we have enough overlap to make it worth it, and they like buying kids books for their grandsons to read on mine.

To regulate who pays for what we buy what we want and at the end of the month we each buy a gift card for that amount and put it on the account, like paying off a credit card

Can't you just connect your Kindle to your computer and save the books to your hard drive? Then connect the new Kindle with its own account and move the books from your hard drive to that Kindle? No, the books won't be backed up via Amazon, but if you paid for them for your use, I don't see that you're breaking any laws by moving your own books back onto your own Kindle just because you changed accounts. You'd have to back up as you would any important files (music, photos, etc) but you could do it. I use Calibre (someone here mentioned it) and that backs up everything for me.
