Default External Flash-DSLR Camera question??

I don't know how many of you use an external flash for your DSLR camera but I am looking into getting one and I am absolutely clueless. I really try not to use flash unless absolutely necessary but I just got asked to photograph a friends wedding this coming summer. This is something I have never done before but would really like to do. If I am going to do it I need to get a flash and would love if anyone could share any input on them. Especially what one you have and pros and cons. I have a Canon Rebel Xt if that matters. Are there tons of different types of flashes? I'm sure they make them to fit certain makes of camera's right? Any help would be great!

I recently purchased an external flash (for my Nikon) to photograph an outdoor nighttime wedding reception and let me tell you, it's so awesome!!! I don't know how I lived with out it!

Whatever you end up getting, just be sure the flash head can rotate side to side and it can move up and down at different angles so that you don't have the overexposed, cave look, and you can bounce the light. :-) Also, the pull down light diffuser shield over the front of the flash is a huge plus!

Just my two cents....

I have a speedlite for my XTi and it stays on that thing most of the time. I love to flash! LOL!

This photo was taken at 9:00 at night with only the kitchen light on behind me in the next room:

and these were in a dark reception hall with yellow lighting:

Like Amanda, I have an XTi and the 430EXII speedlight and love it! I got mine through Amazon in March, they had the best price and free shipping. The next model up is the 580EXII and after doing lots of research I felt like the 430EXII was plenty of flash for me, plus it's about half the price!

Here's a photo of my nephew, it was taken at my parents house during my brother & sister-in-law's wedding reception with very little overhead light.

I also used it to do photos at a teen fashion show in a school gym with very little light and the photos turned out great there too.

I've been wondering about speedlights, since I've actually started going to school and learning about photography and my camera. I was really torn, one getting the cheaper one, but now I'm thinking I might. Can you say Christmas List! LOL!

And, FYI, B&H has it for $250 right now with free shipping until January.

I bought DH the 580 Speedlight for his XTi. He uses it mostly as a fill flash.
