hostess gifts
Do people still do these? We've been invited to a rather large fall cookout (at least 15 families are signed up in the food list) and this is our first non-church or family thing we'll have gone to. Do we take the hostess anything?

Gee, I don't think so??? I can't say I have ever brought a hostess gift when I had to bring a dish to share. If it was a holiday feast like Thanksgiving, and you were a guest who was not expected to bring food I would do a gift.

I agree with Brook. Since you are bringing food, no, if you weren't, yes.

I believe they're optional for potlucks, but we would bring something small anyway. A 6-pack of fancy beer or a bottle of wine is usually what we bring unless we know they're both non-drinkers.
