Default Need b-day gift ideas for 7 yr old boy

I'm clueless on this!!

It's my 7 year old cousin's bday this weekend, and I have NO clue what to get him. So far I have a Transformer's bday card, and made him a little mini hybrid album of pics of him, his brother and my DS - who he LOVES.

I asked his parents, and they said he doesn't really need anything (I was hoping he still needed something for school). So now I have no clue!

I thought about giving him cash, or a GC to a store - but does a 7 year old appreciate money and/or a gift card? Just seemed to me that at that age, he would want to unwrap an actual gift.

Help!

My ds is 6 and was thrilled to have gift certificates after his b-day party. He got $60 and was able to get at least 5 toys out of that. He was happy!

If your cousin loves your DS and if they live nearby, why don't you give him a coupon (or maybe several) for activities to do with your family or your son? Like maybe a certificate good for a playdate with your son or one that's good for a day at the zoo or the park or a coupon for a day of playing mini golf or whatever else he may be interested in. If you do several coupons, then you could put these coupons together into a little coupon book for him.

My 7 year old nephew is a Lego nut. He always loves getting more for his collection.

The kids do appreciate getting GCs but, I dunno, I just really like giving an actual gift that you put thought into, and that they will truly appreciate. I think that sends the better message about the true joy of gift-giving. If I do ever include GCs, it's as a part of an actual gift, and it's usually for them to spend during something we'll all do together as a special outing. For example, a trip to Build-A-Bear is a super special day for us, and I'll give them a B-A-B, unstuffed, plus a GC. Then we all go together, they get their new friend made, and get to buy an outfit &/or accessories.
