Default The New Camera Bug Bit me...

For the last 5ish 6ish years I've been shooting (in Auto) with my nikon d40. It's autofocus is now dead (on all lenses)... so I'm lusting after...er...looking at new nikons. Anyone have any recommendations? I guess I could switch to Canon, but I already have 3 nikon lenses that like. I take a lot of indoor pictures and pictures of animals.

if you aren't wanting to put in the time to learn and be able to shoot in manual, I'd just go with whatever the current base model DSLR Nikon has available.

I'd love to be able to learn to shoot out of manual mode. The last 8 years I've been so busy with school I haven't had much time for learning much else. BUT now I'm able to take more online classes and community classes now. I was thinking after the 2 community classes I'm taking now, I'd like to take a photography class. Maybe...who knows! Hubby would like for the new camera to take really fast pictures so we can photograph birds.

I believe they have the D3200, D5200, and D7100 - each at a slightly higher price point than the one before it. I have a D7000 currently which I love (although I am going to sell soon and upgrade to the D7100 I think) - I wanted the more advanced but not quite "pro" level since I had pretty much mastered manual settings on my D50 and this one handles light a lot better.

That said, it took me YEARS to get there with my D50 so I think you could still get the base model and be happy with it for a long time to come!

Good luck with your camera hunt!

I know not all lenses that fit the 40 will fit the newer models. We have that problem with my daughter's 60 so double check they'll work with a newer base before you order.
