Default Yeast Infections....

Okay....I have never had one of these. My DD #1 (18) has one right now. She has been to the doctor and is on an antibiotic.

My question is this.....are they really soooo bad that you can't get off the couch for 2 days? I mean, I know she is hurting and is walking funny but, seriously is it so bad that you can't make your own food/drinks, run your own bath, etc.

I just need to know because I don't want to be unsympathetic but, I am the type of person who has to be almost dead to not still be going and going and going. I have NEVER been laid up flat on my back for 48 hours. So, I can sometimes put higher expectations on my kids.

So, tell me peeps....is it that bad?

I'm with la. I get one every time I take an antibiotic and life goes on as normal...just a little bit more uncomfortably.

Um no. They are annoying...but not that bad. I get one 2-3 times a year...I'm just prone to get them for some reason and usually just have mild itching and as soon as I start a treatment the symptoms are gone.

Thank you for your honesty girls....that is what I assumed but, I would hate to seem like a "bad mom" for not wanting to keep catering to her every whim. She is very lazy (thanks to her father for that one) so I almost feel like this is an excuse to lay around for a few days and not go to school. She is in cosmetology school.

I told her this morning that if she is so bad that she can't even take care of herself that she needed to go back to the doctor. So, that is where she is at right now. I just know that she is depressing me! She even told me the same night that she first went to the doctor that she thought she needed to go to the emergency room. I told her she could do that but, she was paying the $150 co-pay for it.

I get them everytime I take antibiotics but I take a pill that is just one pill and you are done and I use a cream like monistat or gynelotrimin (think thats what they are called) and that helps with the itching/burning. I mean it itches pretty bad sometimes but you gotta kinda ignore it all until it starts to fade. But it never kept me from functioning.

I've only had one before (that I know of) and I didn't even know I had it..found out when I was getting my pap done. I wouldn't think many would be that bad as to not do anything for 2 days because of it.

Nee Nee - make sure to get her some acidophilus, whether in a natural forum like natural yogurt, or in pill form if she can't stand yogurt. It'll help with rebuilding the good beasties while the drugs take care of the bad ones I always make sure to get on it if I'm on an antibiotic to stave off any yeast infections, but it can help rebuild what the drugs are killing trying to get rid of the bad stuff.

Seriously... she was put on an antibiotic for a yeast infection?! That can make it worse.

They can be miserable, but yes, I believe she is being dramatic. Here's what I do when I get one: cut my sugar down. Sugar can help breed yeast. I also up my probiotics intake. I take a powder because they are better than anything you can find in a yogurt, IMO. I also wet a cotton ball (I use cloth facial rounds), put about 7 DROPS of grapefruit seed extract on the wet cotton ball and apply to the infected area. I would also wash her undies with grapefruit seed extract in the wash. Tea Tree Oil and vinegar in the wash can also help kill yeast.

If that doesn't work, then I go and ask for an antifungal. I prefer oral Diflucan.

There could also be something else going on, like a urinary tract infection that they didn't catch. That is extremely painful.

Are you sure it's antibiotics that she's on? I've never heard of that. If she is on bcp, that can make it worse. Also, have her avoid anything fermented (cheese, soy sauce, vinegar, etc...) and stay totally away from sugar...check sugar content in food. Those are also things that will help with the yeasties.

I had my first one when I was 8 mos pregnant with Rachel. Doctor said I was getting a UTI and needed antibiotics, and wham! wound up with more than just the UTI.
It was not fun, but it wasn't as bad as what she says she's experiencing.
I will say this...trying to treat that problem with an 8 mo pg belly...umm...you just can't reach it Probably one of the most embarrassing moments of my life...after trying for a good 10 minutes (and hubby checking on me over and over) was having to get HIM to do the application for me. Talk about mortified!

Ditto I've never heard of prescribing an antibiotic for a YI....only an antifungal. I swear by GSE too. C and I battled thrush for about 2 months after he was born and nothing was working until I got the GSE....it was gone in like 3 days!!!!

Also I take Culturelle probiotics.....supposedly those are the only ones proven to withstand stomach acid and make it to the intestines. You can get it for $20 bucks at Wal Mart

I seriosly had one for a year Straight! I went to the OB 3 times for it and I just couldn't kick it! I had to take 3 Diflucan pills and then do the 7 day yeast kit to finally kick it. After that I started taking those Asidophlis pills on a daily basis along with eating tons of Yogurt! Also ALL COTTON panties and none tight fitting jeans are a must! But she should seriously get her a$$ off the couch because even though they burn and are itchy it's not like she has the Flu or something.

If she is in pain like that maybe she does have a UTI as well and in that case she needs to go back in and do a urine test and get some Macrobid going.

I have had them a few times, very itchy, very uncomfortable, but not lie on the couch bad. I will never take that 1 day pill again though. I had it once, took it and ended up with horrible, painful cramps that night. Crappy thing was I was on a date when the cramps kicked in. That was lovely.

I think there's a bit of drama there too.

I had chronic yeast infections when I was pregnant with my first two babies. With DS in particular there was one time where I swore I was going to die. The Dr. refused oral meds so I was waiting on the cream to kick in. But still, I wasn't on the couch for two days. I just walked like a cowboy for a few days.

I've been lucky like you Neenee and I haven't had one, but I know they are pretty common and most aren't laid out by them! maybe shes dramatizing it some, or maybe shes the rare situation. who knows *shrugs* I try to give the benefit of the doubt sometimes.
