I just got laid off....
 ETA: I probably should have elaborated. Yesterday we had a floor-wide meeting and the CEO warned us that there would be company-wide lay offs. But also praised our division for doing so well, blah blah blah. Yea, then I got let go today. Low man on the totem pole gets cut first. It's the worst timing on EARTH. I won't be able to job hunt until OCTOBER because of the big vacation we have planned next month. And then I'll get screwed on maternity leave once the baby comes. ::sigh:: Jordan filled out the paperwork this afternoon to have me added to his insurance, so that least there's that I guess.

Not really. I'm super upset. I was completely blind sided by it. It wasn't performance based, it was just seniority. 6 years of my life there, and that's the thanks I get. 2 hours to clean out my cubicle and hand in my key.
We'll be fine, we'll figure things out. But, you know. Still. ::sigh::

That's terrible. I guess there never is a good time for that to happen. So you were the last hired? When I first saw your post, I thought ..... lawsuit! Discrimination against the pregnant girl!

I was not the last hired in my department (which has all of 5 other people in it), but I do/did have the least seniority.

Oh no! I'm so sorry! I had thought discrimination at first, too.
Sometimes when these things happen, they become blessings and you end up with a WAY better job you love more, but would never have had if you had not been laid off. Def not easy to see now, but I'm hoping it will work out for you and you'll be even happier then you were before. I'm so sorry, with the timing. HUGS

So sorry for you, Colleen. Is there any chance you can make a scene and milk them for some compensation money? I know the laws are a lot different in the US, but surely they don't want bad reputation, firing a pregnant woman...
In any way, I will keep you in my thoughts and keep my fingers crossed for you. The little good thing in all this is, whatever company you will work for next, you know they won't have a problem with a working mommy. That's at least worth something. I hope a new door will open for you soon.

Oh Colleen, I'm so sorry. Where one door shuts, another opens I hope. I firmly believe everything happens for a reason, and for our growth (though we often don't feel it at the time). Prayers coming your way that you will find the path God wants for you.

P.S. I didn't know they could do that! Here is forbidden by a federal law to fire a preggo up to 6 months after delivering the baby. If you adopt a child who is less than 1yo, you have the same maternity rigths.

I was laid off from B&N the week we found out I was pregnant with Connor. Our plan had been for me to stay home once he was born...our plans were just moved up. Hopefully, this will give you time to sort things out, recover from your sickness, and form a great game plan that will be better for you than now. I hope it work sout!

yea that really sucks. First thing I thought iis that they knew you'd likely be taking time off for maternity leave and its easier to let you go now then to wait til then. We have been through this in the past with my husband and I agree you do usually find a way better job somewhere else. I know he did when it happened with him. I am sure you will too.

I'm so sorry! I was laid off this year too but I wasn't pregnant, and I hadn't been there 6 years like you!
I know when I was laid off I couldn't discuss my severance package specifically, but did they at least take care of you in that way? Or can you get unemployment? I know you'll work it all out, but the timing of it all still stinks. (((hugs)))

That's so terrible that they didn't give severance....I'm glad you can file for unemployment...how is the market for bridge engineers or whatever it is that you do?
 I've never quite understood but it all sounds way over my head! A civil engineer that I'm friends with here in Lex got laid off two weeks ago, after surviving her firm's layoffs last year....seems to be going around.
