Default Have you been to Honolulu?

Hey girls!

My husband travels quite a bit for work these days and it’s in pretty random places. He does something in an airport and comes back.
But this time he’s going to Hawaii for 3 days plus 2 of travel. My parents are here from France and could watch the kids. I’m very tempted to go with him even though he will be pretty busy for 2 of those days.

We lived in Seattle for 10 years and never made it to Hawaii. Now that we are in Maryland I told myself we would never have the opportunity to go. So should I go?? We are probably gonna end up in a dumpy hotel but should I go anyway? I can always scramble to the beach or just venture.

Is Honolulu a nice area? Places to recommend or things to do in Honolulu?

My parents were stationed in Hawaii for 4 years while I was in college. I got 1 round-trip flight each year on Uncle Sam's dime to visit them.

Take the opportunity and GO.

That said, be forewarned that Hawaii is hella expensive. It's got the highest COLA - er, cost of living allowance - of any domestic station. Like, 22.5%. Everything costs more, from a gallon of milk and a dozen eggs to eating a meal out at a restaurant.

But it sounds like this is your chance to take your least costly trip to the islands, with your husband's airfare and your lodging covered, so do it!

There is so much to do on the Honolulu side of Oahu. You could spend hours on Waikiki beach, enjoying the sand and the surf. Public access beaches are all free of charge. You can walk up and down the main strip of Waikiki and window shop. Getting around the island is easy and inexpensive if you use The Bus. (That's what they call their public transit system.)

If you snorkel at all, I highly recommend checking out Hanauma Bay. That was one of our favorite places to go on the weekend. Get there as early as you possibly can - like, right around sunrise - and you might find yourself swimming with sea turtles.

If you want an athletic morning, you can hike Diamond Head.

And make sure you try POG (it's a juice blend - passionfruit, orange, and guava) and eat fresh pineapple while you're on the island.

I'm sure I'll think of more when I'm not quite as brain-foggy, but that's for a start.

Pack your bags and gooooo! Besides a relatively inexpensive trip as far as Hawaii goes, it's a great opportunity for some actual time (not an hour here or there) with your hubs! My mom always says she likes taking care of the grandkids better when I'm not around. She loves seeing me too but it's not the same she says. So in other words, this could be a really nice thing for your parents too.

I would totally go!! I've been there 5 or 6 times and it's always worth it! (assuming it's tolerable to travel from Maryland)

I vote go!! I have never been but got the opportunity to go with my hubby to France for work. I did sightseeing while he had meetings. It was a nice getaway with the hubs. We try to get away for a night or two yearly if possible or more. <3 It is great for your marriage.

Hawaii is so pretty! Oahu has some beautiful sights plus historical places to visit.

Pearl Harbor, wake up early and hike Diamond Head, the flea market is held on the grounds of their football stadium ($5 t-shirts...well, that was quite a few years ago...but still), China man's Hat, North Shore, Dole Pineapple plantation, some larger resorts give free lei's or even lessons on how to make your own. I was there for a Choir Tour in college, so many years ago, but would love to go back one day. Even if you only stay in the area of the hotel during the day and then go out in the evenings...it's Hawaii! Go to explore and say you have been there!

I've never been to Hawaii. I would take the opportunity if I were you! Let us know what you decide.

I think it's just a matter of knowing exactly when my husband is going there.

Supposedly he would come home a day before my parents have to fly back to France and that could get tricky if we have any delays coming back...

So we need the exact dates and then decide from there but I think I want to make it happen!

I looooved my time in Hawaii. The beaches, the amazing waters, the food! Lomi Lomi

Go go go!! We plan to go next year for our 20th anniversary. I went alone with some friends the first time and promised the next time would be with hubby.

I can't link to my other galleries but here are a "few" pages about it. Maybe it will give you the push you need lol
Maybe renting a car would be a good way to see more too but there are penty to do only in Honolulu. Free hula dance at the mall probably too. Bon voayge !!

Definitely go! In addition to what the others have said there is a Pearl Harbor Memorial tour/museum that was interesting to visit if you like History. If you have a chance to go to the north side of the island definitely visit the Polynesian Cultural Center for the show and luau.

Flights are too expensive! I don't think I will be able to go. It's $2500 for me alone to fly to Honolulu. It's insane!

Wow, that's pricey. I say watch for seat sales, etc. If you're able to go then go! Hawaii is my favourite place in all the world and I would go there in a heartbeat given the chance. Lot's of amazing suggestions listed above. Hubby and I drove spent a day driving around a good portion of the island and discovered all sorts of interesting little places and towns. Super fun!!!

I have not been to Hawaii. We lived in Florida for too many years to go to a tropical destination. It's SO far, too. I hate to fly anywhere, let alone a trip that far. You should go if you have the opportunity, though.

Oh nooo! Sorry for you. For that price you could consider coming to Japan. It's crazy now.
