Default Clowns at a kids party - good idea or not?

Wesley's 4th birthday party is in May and I'm planning now. I was thinking about renting a husband/wife clown team for the party (about 40 kids will be there) - but after running the idea past a few people, I'm second-guessing.

It never occured to me that clowns are scary to some (a lot??) of kids, and/or that adults are creeped out by them. They're obviously cute clowns - nothing scary.

Thoughts?

They creep me out too. I don't think I would ever hire one for my sons parties. I find that a bounce house seems to keep the kids busy.

I would vote no. My youngest is terrified of clowns. I would never let her go to a party that had them. Apparently, a fear of clowns is pretty common.

Clowns creep me out, so I wouldn't be surprised if some of the kids thought they were scary.

I think a TON of kids are scared of clowns, and I know a lot of adults that are creeped out by them (as is evident in this thread, LOL!). So I would have to say no.

LOL! This thread brings up a question I've had for a long time . . . since just about everyone I know is either creeped out by clowns or just plain can't stand them, why are they still around? I've been petrified of them my entire life, as has almost everyone I've ever talked to.

My vote is a resounding "NO"!

I would vote no. Even if Wes likes them, I am sure there would be someone there that would be traumatized...

Maybe clowns are fine in the ring or on a stage, but up close and personal is very scary!! Esp for little kids. Totally larger than life.

Well, I personally don't have an issue with clowns, but based on this thread, I'd probably opt for something else. What about a magician?

I wouldn't think a magician would be any better/safer than a clown. Same concept, different costume.

Do you really need entertainment? I mean, he's only 4. And *fingers crossed* it'll be nice out in may. Can't you just have outdoor fun activities? Bubbles, water guns, balloon/water balloon toss, (hard boiled) egg race, 3 legged race, etc etc?

That's what I'm HOPING for... but it has rained the past three years. I will keep my fingers crossed, and have outside stuff planned, like always - but no joke it has been a torrential downpour the past three years. Plus it's a circus party, so I thought a clown would be fun!

with my dd, it's not just clowns, it's 'characters' in general (anything in a costume)...

BOTH of my kids are terrified of clowns.. hence why we have never been to the circus. I know they would both love the animals and the acrobats.. but.. damn clowns. :|

I've never liked clowns (or mimes) and especially since Stephen King's It. After I read that, I had to sleep with the lights on for a week! Does anyone remember the scene from Poltergeist with the clown doll that basically comes alive in the kids room at night? I had a dream JUST like that the other night. It was the scariest dream I've had in a long, long time.

Anyhow, my friends did have a magician at their daughter's party and my kids LOVED that party. I don't think magicians are scary to kids, so long as they aren't creepy clown magicians.

I was a clown so I have no issue with it. At my DD's 2nd birthday we had a HUGE circus themed JoJo Circus party. So clowns were a given. I had 2 friends that are professional clowns that dressed up and did face painting for us.

I'd vote no on the clown. Let's just say I wouldn't want a strange man who enjoys dressing up as a clown near my kids.

LOL This thread cracks me up! Neither I or my kid would have an issue with a clown. But it looks like we're in the minority here. lol

this thread is funny.

i vote no. they creep me out.

could you get a juggler or love the idea of ballon animal person - but they may all be clowns. what about renting circus games (if there is such a place) or a giant bounce house.

Not a fan of clowns personally but my kids don't mind them & having encountered 2 of the 3 local clowns for hire at various restaurant family nights, I would not be bothered by them at a party. I think they are creepy but it wouldn't keep me from sending the kids to party with them, unless the kids told me they were afraid of them.

This thread makes me giggle.

I don't have any issue with clowns so I actually think the husband/wife clown team sounds kind of cute! But obviously not everyone feels that way so it might be best to steer clear just to be safe. Better no clown than a scared child or adult, haha.

We have college kids here that do balloon animals at local restaurants for tips. Do you have anything like that there? They also do parties on the side.
