You want your EHD to have a power button and also to have a fan in it if at all possible. 500GB+ in size...the bigger it is, the longer it will be before you have to get a second one, but also the higher the price.

I do NOT recommend the Western Digital My Book. I recently bought a 1TB one, and it's sooo annoying...it squeals all the time (apparently it's a known problem with the fan) and makes me insane - it's this really high pitched squeal. ARGH! LOL! I'm still half considering taking it back.

That's so weird Bree, because I bought a 500gb WG My Book and have had no problems. But mine is also my second backup, so it's only turned on once a month.

My main EHD is a 250GB Iomega that's almost 3 years old.
My western digital My Book is a 500GB one that I got a few months ago.
I wanted a Maxtor/Maxtor One Touch but at the time decided to save some money on it so I wouldn't get yelled at by Jordan (who thought buying a second EHD was stupid).

My bro told me it's better to get an internal harddrive with an external enclosure. Not sure why... but I did. My enclosure failed me and I had to stick the internal part in the computer. I was glad it was internal, but I'm not sure if it would've happened without an enclosure. Also, Newegg.com has great prices and reviews! that's where we got ours and some ram and lots of other things

I also do not recommend WD. I bought one of their EHDs and it lasted less then 60 days ... and because it was over 30 days, I'm stuck with a replacement that is the same make/model. Like Bree mentioned, you get what you pay for and paying a little more for such an important item is definitely worth it. It is always very frustrating to lose data. I'm so paranoid that I only plug mine in once a month to make transfers (WD tech support told me not to keep it on when I'm not using it).

I have 2 seagates 250 GB each. The first one I've had for nearly 2 years and it's never given me any problems..I use it daily and it stores all my photos and scrap stuff. The second is my backup to the first and is about 8 mos old. They were both about 90 bucks a piece I think but I've been happy with them..2 yrs is pretty darn good I think lol

I have a 500GB Western Digital My Book that I've had for about 2 years now and it's given me no issues. I also have a portable WD 320GB pink one. No issues with that so far but I've only had it a month!
